Losing food and population

Hello guys, i have a little problem..
Along these 4 days of playing CivWorld I always lose food or population.
It is a consequence of war or barbarian hordes?
Sorry for the "nooby" question but i didn't find anything about it...

If you lose battles to barbarians they'll steal one villager from you.

I'm part of a very weak Civ in game 958, to prevent these futile losses it is better to change civ or to pump-up my army?

Barbarians are random. Given the connectivity issues lately, it's probably more likely no one was around to chase them off.

Build a bit of an army, or have some hammers in reserve in case you get attacked again. If you beat the Barbarians you get food/population as a prize, if you are the MVP.

Yes, barbarian attacks can be a good event if you're the one who fights them off and gets the bonus.
