I love building the Baron and causing chaos with my Werewolves with whomever im at war with but in my current game as Lanun, Prince, huge map, custom continents, 14 AI's, epic speed, I made a mistake. I gifted a ravenous werewolf to the Dark Elf civ. I went to war with them a turn later in order to kill it (which messed my game up a little) and thought I had managed to get it but something went wrong. Somewhere along the line within 2 turns the enemy had created another were that I didn't know about. Anyway fast forward 30 turns or so and I was at war with the Svaltar (spelling?) again. I invaded their lands which were on a separate continent only to be confronted by masses of were's. I dont want to exaggerate this but there were loads of them. Whats more the Dovillo also had them somehow and long story short they knocked my invasion right back. Few decades of fast forwarding and Hyboream gets wiped out by the Dovillo, shortly after the Dark Elfs got whipped too and when I finally landed again to see what was going on the Were's were all over the place and although I probably could have beat them I decided to call the game a loss and restart.

Now in all my games I have never seen the AI use the Baron effectively. I can only recall ever seeing him built once and never found him.

Has anyone came across this problem before? I suppose its not really a problem so much as just slightly unbalancing (i feel) as were's are so powerful. Not because of their stats but just because of how many you can get and how fast.

The Ai can use the baron well if they get him early and get werewolves quickly--the Ai does well with self-replicating units.

Interesting!

I am one of those guys who rushes to get the Baron - he really is the great equalizer in bringing you back into many games.

I have rarely seen the ai beat me to him, but when it has, I have seen the Baron attack stupidly and get killed early in those games.

I've never seen anything like you mentioned, but it would have been fun to see. I always had that limit on werewolves, but never thought of a game where several other civs had the limit too.

I made some slight changes to version 16, including adding a wonder only buildable by sacrificing the Baron, anda werewolf unit that required that wonder. Somehow, those werewolves became the defalt units for barbarians to build, and a little later every AI civ had some too. By the year 50 I might have been the only layer who had any non-werewolf units left (that is, if I even lasted that long. Those werewolves I added were some pretty powerful units). That was a crazy game.
I have noticed that the AI does better with ravenous and blooded werewolfs that with the Baron. It probably thinks he is too valuble to lose, but uses all other werewolves very well.

this is very dated info ....

werewolfs are the ultimate use for the soulforge or the alter. last i heard the formula for converting an enemy to a werewolf was just a percentage based on the max allowed werewolfs (aka if you remove werewolfs you can make more).
