I cannot get this to work. I am trying to play multiplayer mac to mac with 2 new retail copies of C3C. I have a D-Link Router and am attempting this wirelessly. I am hosting on a 2.8GHz Imac (intel core) with 4 gb of ram and am trying to connect with an older imac. I have tried it both ways and seem to get a bit further with the old mac hosting. The host game does not show up in the available games window at all and i have to attempt to connect via IP... when i do this the host window shows the message "so-and-so has joined the game" and then in the player settings window it says "connecting..." forever... on the Joining computer side it wont let you choose your player settings and there is no ready button.. so you can't actually complete joining the game.

Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

Do you have the OS X firewall switched on in either Mac?

OK, i found it under Security Preference pane, It is set to "allow all incoming connections" on the host computer, and "Firewall Off" on the older Imac

I am assuming your Macs are not directly connected to the Internet, and your D-Link router is providing a hardware firewall for your two Macs. If you have wireless access into your LAN then make sure it is using good wireless security - WPA and a secure pass-phrase.

If the above are true then it should be safe to turn off the Mac firewalls

Go into System Preferences. After that it depends on the OS X version.

In Leopard (OS X 10.5) select Security->Firewall. To turn off the firewall, make sure that "Allow all incoming connections" is highlighted.

In earlier systems, select Sharing->Firewall (if I remember correctly) and make sure the firewall is turned off.

I even tried direct connection via firewire... same thing.. the host mac sees that the other computer is trying to join, but i am unable to choose any player settings on the joining computer. This is frustrating...??

I still haven't got ANY game to show up in the list window, i have to join via direct IP and that obviously isnt working. hmm

Sorry, I don't have any recent experience of trying this, and I don't have a convenient way to test it now, as my old G4 turned its toes up a few weeks ago and I haven't got around to trying to fix it. Let's hope someone else pops up who can assist. Meanwhile it may be helpful to give more details of the Macs you are trying to connect - eg OS versions, the older system hardware (PPC or Intel?). Have you patched either or both copies of Civ3 to the Rev A version?

I am updating the one version to "A", the other one already is... maybe that will help. ALSO, do you know.. are macs able to play over the internet? I tried it that way with game ranger.. and it seemed to be working.. when i joined with the one computer over gameranger it automatically started civ but it only gave the LAN option.. I havent seen play over internet on any mac version.. only PC.. is that not an option for macs?

Thanks again.
Brian

I really can't remember how a game shows up on GameRanger. I suspect the Play over Internet option is a hangover from the Windows version, though.

If you want to test it I've opened a game ...
