Please use this thread to post any Machiavellian strategies you use to fool the other civs.

I'll start by giving my favourite one which is to buy everything a civ has (tech, etc.) using ONLY a per turn transaction when I'm about to declare war on them. The declaration of war will erase my obligation to continue to pay for 20 turns/years and still gives me the upper hand with all the acquired stuff. Muuaahhaaaaahhaa!!!

What does that have to do with Machiavelli?

Everything!

<sinister uncontrolled giggling>

If you do this, you deserve it if the rest of the world gangs up on you.

I think this isn't a good strategy, at least not at the higher levels.
It will destroy your reputation, which takes a very long time and a lot of gold/resources to repair. On the lower levels, when you are equally or more advanced and more powerful than the AI, it's probably a very good strategy because diplomatic relationship aren't that important than.

BTW, Macchiavelli didn't invent strategies. He analyzed politics and leadership and pointed out what tactic/strategy/policy worked well and what didn't in gaining and maintaining power.

Since Civ3 is my first exposure to the Civ series, perhaps I can be excused for my ignorance, but I just realized that the reason why the other civilizations constantly band together to destroy me might have something to do with my underhanded Macchiavellian tactics. I guess I should start playing nice.
