On mars already, waiting!
O.k. I have my own reasons for sugesting this, (partly to con people in to helping me with a possible expansion of my futuristic space scenario) :D But who would be interested in a futuristic mech design competition?

We could have judges and categories, and some ground rules, we may even be able to rustle up a prize. The best bit however would be seeing how different unit designers go about designing thier creations. If its fun and successful, we could also follow it up with other competitions, such as WWII vehicles or leaderheads.

I'm just throwing this idea in to the air and seeing how it comes down. Who would be up for making a award winning unit with some conditions? It would be an exelent chance to realy make something special. Teams would be welcome (someone making the model and someone else animating it etc..).

A few points;
The model should be original, not just grabbed from a TV show or game, though it could be "in the style of" somthing. perhaps it would be fun if they were all fictional mechs from mechwarrior or star seige. This would help set up a tech system and some history for the design. Personaly i prefer the battletech/mechwarrior universe.

It wouldn't have to be a human-shaped-walking mech, tanks or aerospace fighters would also be welcome.

extra points could be gained for originality of design and armament, if six people make heavy mechs armed with laser hands while one person makes a light mech with jetpacks, the light mech will get extra points.

all entries should have civ colours, even if they represent pirates or partisan units.

A scoring system would have to be established, perhaps a mix of poll voting and judges. Each entry could have its own thread, with a poll (with a timeout), so people could vote on the unit as it develops and even make sugestions. It would also help people to make more original choices and encourage a spirit of competition. :)

to give you some ideas heres my possible entry, a compact light close assault mech with heavy twin machine guns and shoulder mounted SRMs. so far its just the model, skins would come later and some changes may occur;

SM,

that looks great, U could get up with Ripptide if u need help, He has made a lot of great mechs for his Mechwarrior mod already.

woudl I be ablke to draw a mech on paper, and submit it?- i have a few idea reagrding what a more realistic mech would look like ;)

A little friendly competition never hurt anyone. Depending on how soon the unit would need to be completed, I might enter something . . . never made a "mech" before though, hmm . . .

sounds like a good idea:)

Well I have I is my old one that I made a long time ago. Don't have time to make anthing new, have lots more other projects to do.

heh...
Smoking mirror is trying to sell his work to us! :lol:

I've never done a mech either. And I use pov-ray (do I get extra points for that :p ). I would like to see how would this kind of competition turn out (every submitter starts trashing others work... ;) :p )

This sounds fun(even if its just SM trying to get some more units for his mod:p). I cant make units but I volunteer for judge, if you make this competition. One question though: What should be the price? Just an honor title or something?

No, I've never made a mech before either. I think it would make a good showcase of people skills though, with an infantry style walk and mechanical special effects, I think most people would be a little stretched by the reqirements.

Mech covers a range of units though, so people could submit almost anything as long as it was futuristic and mechanical. Should it just be limited to walking bipedal mechs? Or would it be great to see tanks, hovercrafts, planes and boats too?

As a prize you could put "1st place in the civfanatics mech design competion" in your sig or whatever. Any way, its not the winning but the taking part etc...

I think a seperate section for concept drawings would be a good idea.

As a time restriction I'm proabably moving house at the end of march, so will be off the forums for a while. That would make as good a deadline as any.

Should a basic camo scheme be agreed? how about scale?

I don't think that there should be a camo scheme, but I think that knowledge an appropriate scale would be nice. I would think that a "mech," wherever that came from, is bigger than a person. There more like the size of a tank or something, right?

I don't think that there should be limits on how they maneuver, either: bipedal, tank treads, etc.

Well, I don't have time now, but is there some sort of deadline?

OK. to start the ball rolling heres my entry for the "picture" part of the comp. It could be anything from hand drawn to computer generated 3d design.

Heresmy mech crosssing a shallow stream on a partly terraformed mars;
