MAFIA (v.1.3)
- La Cosa Nostra

The mafia is a basic part of American life, deniance or not. Every generation has had its underworld kings. Unforgettable personalities that commit unspeakable crimes. We call them names like Al "Scarface" Capone, "Lucky" Luciano or "the Dapper Don".

The mafia is a business. It turns over more money than America's ten largest industrial corporations. It saw its break through during the prohibition era and came out as the leading crime fraction in New York City. Most importantly, it won control over the Brooklyn docks during this time. After the prohibition, the NYC mafia was organized into five families - the Bonanno family, the Colombo Family, the Gambino family, the Genovese family, and the Lucchese family. The mafia expanded into different forms of crime, to prostitution, gambling and racketeering.

Mafia power peaked in the United States in the mid 20th century, until a series of FBI investigations in the 1970s and 1980s somewhat curtailed the Mafia's influence. Despite the decline, the Mafia and its reputation have become entrenched in American popular culture, portrayed in movies, TV shows, and even product commercials.

This is the story of the Italian mafia's rise and fall in New York City.

CIVILIZATIONS:
1. Bonanno Family
2. Colombo Family
3. Gambino Family
4. Genovese Family
5. Lucchese Family

6. New York City (AI)
7. NYPD (AI)

(8. Criminals: barbarian civ, consisting of various unorganized crime fractions)

PS: See to README before playing. Some very significant pointers are given there.

---------

INFO:

MOBSPEAK:
Don't think that it is my English there's something wrong with when reading the pop up windows. I've done my best to translate all the text files to mobspeak, to add some flavour to the scen.

BE CAREFUL:
Be extremely careful with attacking police officers of any kind, as they will immediately call on the FBI for assistance. Also, killing civilians is not a very good idea. By killing other ethnic gangsters, you will only encourage them to rise up against you, so bear this in mind before playing. But then again, it's your job to keep unorganized bullies away from your neighborhoods to protect your interests and the people living there.

TERRAIN INFO:
Irrigation, Farmland and Mining have been renamed Bars, Restaurants and Hotels. It has most of the same effects as in vanilla civ, but do take a look at the terrain section in civilopedia for a more detailed description. All terrains have their own distinct feature.

Don't bother building roads, as the effect of roads have been disabled.

Also, the terrain transformation time has been drastically reduced, in order to encourage the players to go into the construction business, which has a history of mafia relation in NYC.

Here's what they transform to:

Non Habitated ---> Low Dense Res.
Low Dense Res. ---> Residential
Residential ---> Upper Class Res.
Upper Class Res ---> Commercial

Docks ---> Industrial
Commercial ---> Industrial
Industrial ---> Estates
Park ---> Estates
Estates ---> Commercial

So, don't hesitate to transform terrain. It will only take you 5 turns. Irrigation etc 4.

ADDITIONAL INFO:
Cars are in reality naval units and the roads are ocean with pollution as an overlaying terrain. Global warming has been removed from the scenario, and no roads lead into the Hudson river or any other NY water surrondings.

To keep up with the AI tech race you should prioritize trade.

Changes from what? :confused:

Anyway, if you mean from v.1, then basically the most noticeable is that cops now have the air flag, to avoid them taking over the city after only a couple of turns.

I must agree with pscamp. Tried for two turns and gave up in spite of the fabulous graphics and fantastic concept - whch I mentioned before and won't get into.

It takes fifteen minutes just to cycle through the AI moves. In the meanwhile you need to 'ok' the scramble message twenty times to the sound of an air-raid (p.s. there is also a cavalry sound sneaking in somewhere) plus another 10 messages of various other types like policeman gets killed. The scale of the map is simply too big for this level of detailed reporting.

other suggestion is to get rid of some of the unit descriptions under the defense minister screen (Ignore Zoc which every unit has) and rename some others (Air to Air, sub) so that it is easier to figure out what each unit is good for.

Also, did you mean for it to take 60 turns to research a new tech.

It doesn't even take a fraction of the time to cycle through 1 turn of this scen, than Red Front of 2194 days of war for instance. This isnt't a quick combat scenario, it's a grand campaign scenario. And if you can't wait to experience quality - your loss! :p

It doesn't take 60 turns at all if you send loot (trade) around.

Drop it off on Manhattan as you should with the rest of the loot if possible, the trade there is big enough to give you a decent bonus anyway. Also, dropping it off on docks are quite profitable, as they too have big trade production.

I'm fine with grand campaign but I really urge you to reconsider this 'aircraft' solution to the police guys. It wasn't like this before was it? I'm sure a simple adjustment in the roles would have been sufficient to fix the initial police problem. I tried turn two again and to be accurate, the number of black and irish guys 'scrambling' to defend third party cities against police was not twenty but more like fifty.

Don't you think keeping your finger over the enter button for fifteen mintues and pressing it every ten seconds is reason enough to warrant a change?

I DO! I HATE having to do that, especialy if the enemy takes long turns, I can't go of and get a snack, use theb athroom, or read a book during enemy turns. Though I do think it is somewhat historicaly accurate as africans and irish WERE very poorly treated in the US.
