If you're using standard SMAC, you don't need the CD. Just press "Okay" (or whatever the positive option is) when the no-CD window pops up and the game will load sans movies. This isn't possible with SMAX, though

Is this true? I thought it wasn't like Civ2 in this respect.

Only MGE and ToT has CD-check. Other Civ2 versions don't need the CD.

The movies are part of what makes the Alpha Centauri experience the Alpha Centauri experience.

Yeah, my CD is starting to turn to ****. My favorite game and its CD starting to cease function. I don't know what's wrong.

I thought there was suppose to be a SMAC Gold Edition out a while back, but it never happened.....

Use a program like Alcohol 120% to take an image of the CD and then play it off your hard drive. Saves a lot of wear and tear, I can tell you.
