How is it done? I'm in this game on Prince level where I play the Zulu's, the African continent is mine and I'm keeping the Mongols out with a city situated strategically near the Suez-canal. Somewhere in 1924 the Aztecs launch a spaceship and I lose. (which causes the game to crash by the way (Winciv)). I want to win this game by winning the space race. Every 8 or 9 turns I get a new tech. I am in Monarchy. I have no wars going on, just one or two Riflemen of Musketeers in each city except for the city that keeps the Mongols out, some 10 units in that one. All my cities have libraries and universities and plenty of scientists. I've seen that changing to republic has dramatically increased my tech research but a turn later some city has too many unhappy people and my government gets overthrown. I have built every wonder in the game including 'keep your citizens happy'-wonders such as Womens Suffrage and Cure for Cancer. I even built SETI-program to boost tech research. Seems to me that changing to a succesful Republic is the only option on beating the Aztecs. Any tips on this matter??

Thanks!

That City that revolts must be appeased. You must do things in it to make it happy. As you don't describe what makes that city nuhappy, I cannot say what you should do, but just see what is the problem and solve it. Urgently !!!

Maybe the problem is that you have to many armies from that city outside it. Just make them go home or change their home city.

Oh and welcome to CFC foruns :)

If you are going for a spaceship win against an advanced opponent at Prince and above, you must have Republic or Democracy. Monarchy will not do.

Why is this? Because science comes from trade arrows and Republic and Democracy both give you 4 arrows per square if there were 3 there under Monarchy.

However, with Republic or Democracy, you can no longer use Martial Law to quell the unrest like you can in Monarchy. With Monarchy a unit in a city forced one unhappy citizen to be content. This has no effect in Republic or Democracy.

Units away from their home cause unhappiness too with Republic or Democracy, whereas they didn't with Monarchy. Check all your city screens for black icons under the units (middle left of screen). Civ 1 is very unforgiving and even if the unit is in a different city of yours it still creates unhappiness. If in another city of yours, activate the unit and press "h". Otherwise bring your units home before you make the change.

Also, assume that you will need to set luxuries to 20%. In Monarchy you may not have needed them at all.

You will also need a temple and possibly a cathedral in each city.

If you still have problems in a city or two, turn some of your citizens into entertainers.

Your other problem, of course, is that you may simply not have enough cities! :)

Excellent help guys, thanks a lot. I will give it a go this weekend, I'll keep you informed on how things are going...

This was too easy! I landed a spaceship in 1874...set my luxuries to 30% to be on the safe side and made the change to democracy..after that, a new tech only cost me 2 turns so after a few turns I was way ahead on technology, after that my cities which all had Mfg.Plants splurted out a spaceship in no time...very cool!! Thanks again for the help, going to try King now....

Well done!:goodjob:

Yes try at King now. You'll have greater opposition from other civs. You'll have more fighting to do. But the principle is the same. However, you may need to be ready to quickly switch in and out of another government temporarily if war threatens, unless you can guarantee having all the 'happy' wonders.

Great work! Please do continue to post at the forums, you still have much to learn :D

Great coachwork stormerne! :goodjob:

For one, changing your luxories to 100% on the last turn is always fun :)
