I thought it would be fun to play a game on a huge map vs one Civ.

I played the Celts vs the Arabs.

Both CIVS had their own land mass and quickly ate them up. We didn't make contact until 500AD. I expected this to be a cake walk (REGENT level). Turned out that managing that many cities was a chore. On top of that at some point the number of cities reached critical mass and any new cities produced all most nothing of value.

I researched straight to gun powder with the idea of a quick earl war. (Using the Celts special unit was out of the question as i did not want to trigger an early GA.)

So..I get to gunpowder and...no saltpeter.. The map (huge!) had exactly ONE source and it was deep in Arab land.

The arabs attack landing some early gunpoweder units but I overwhelm them numbers and arty. I'm not sure at this point how things are going to play out, as the next good unit is Cav and you need saltpeter for that...

I end up getting guerillas and fighting off a massive cavalry attack. Didn't lose any ground..didn't gain any.

To make matters worse there is exactly ONE source of coal, and it too is deep in arab held lands. I'm trying to run a massive land mass WITHOUT railroads.. I bee line to replaceable parts...and same deal with rubber...

The coal is coastal so i land about 25 guerillas along with a crap load of arty, and a settler. I claim the coal and get lucky..some oil shows up.

Arabs ask for peace and I give it gladly. I use a few turns to improve the defense of the coal city(walls, more troops, more arty)...and plan an attack to gain rubber. The turn i was planning to attack to gain the rubber, the arabs break the peace and launch the largest wave of cav I've ever seen at the city with the coal.

The attack lasts so long that I walk away from my PC and watch a hockey game.

A few turns later I'm still holding the coal and now i have the rubber...que the bombers and infantry!

A few turns after that I suffer a culture lose.

Good times!

I think the number of resources is a function of the map size and the number of nations. No need for 10 coal tiles, if you only have 2 nations in the game.

Makes sense, and should have been expected.

Made for a fun game..most games resources and Lux are all over the place and no need to fight for them.

More AI civs makes for a better game in many ways, with one opponent, the diplomacy gets pretty boring. Having nearby opponents allows early wars and makes you need to play better. Give me the normal number any day. Fighting for resources isn't the only reason to go to war, it's actually just one of many reasons (for fun, self-defense, getting a better score, collecting wonders, getting all the luxes, beating up on those that wronged you, etc., etc.) You want a challenge, try playing Always War with normal opponents.

 Sounds fun. Although sounds like it would be a lot of micromanagement, too. But that's a rather unusual resource problem there. Did the Arabs lack any that only you had?

As for corruption, you can decrease it in the editor all the way to zero. It's in the difficulty levels tab - change it for your difficulty level to zero. Don't forget to also delete Courthouses, and probably Police Stations as well (unless you want their less likely to revolt ability to still be there), or the AI will waste tons of money on building those now-useless buildings.

No question. Was more of a: hey lets try this out, kind of thing.
