Based on this screenshot, I tried to make estimation of a civ5 map size...

I do hope it is one of the smallest map type for the game...:

The screenshot has ca. 36 tiles in my estimation (counting the half tiles too),
Now, you can also see the minimap, and that how much this "36 tiles" is of the whole minimap.

In my estimation, this is ca. 5% of the total, and this makes the whole map 720 tiles.
That is like a 40x18 tile map, for instance...

(prove me if I am wrong, I welcome verifications)

I will make estimation for the other screenshot we have, too...

Nah, it seems very useful to zoom in like that because obviously the world is not very explored. It is possibly just zoomed in because there is nothing else to show on the minimap anyway.

Also I have no idea why this would be 5% of the total. PLaying on maps of 40X18 seems weird.

The other pic here is of a bigger map :)

I estimated the window to have ca. 80-85 tiles and its size to be 10x8 mm,
and the minimap to be 80x50 mm,
which makes the map to be 4000-4250 tiles big... that is better than the previous, I say :)

Based on this screenshot, the involved map is a bout 65x35. That is similar to a small map in civ4.

Now, of course, we have no clue if this are small or big maps for civ5. It is likely they are relatively small, since that is the most convenient for making promotional screenshots/demos. (Why bother with a very large map if only a small part is going to be shown.)

Not explored? In modern age? ;)
EDIT: OK, I agree, in this case it is really not explored - but this is just for demo, I guess... (and irrelevant to our question, anyways)

Well, if you zoom, the size of rectangle changes in the minimap, that's all.
Here it is zoomed [edit] out, so you have a big rectangle... which is ca. 5% of the total minimap.

PLaying on maps of 40X18 seems weird.

Perhaps this is a tiny map...

I did a check count of this screenshot's map and got the same: ca. 2300 tiles, yes...

In this video http://e3.gamespot.com/video/6265591/?hd=1 you can see at 1:28, the mouse over menue of one tile which is tile 65x, 23y. And I guess the map is larger than that ;-)

Something is not OK with the x/y and the rate of the sides of the minimap
(I presume it's widescreen),
but still it must be sg. like more than 5000 tiles big... (EDIT: more exactly something like 5400)

Obviously not explored very far. This is probably just set up in some kind of worldbuilder (or just hacked in the code) for screenshots.

I think he meant that the minimap is zoomed to the explored section, not that the player has zoomed. In Civ4 you have this effect pre calendar/stonehenge. It is not unthinkable that this is the reason here. I think that's most likely.

I thing I got is: it is the i/j I have to count with...

so it is back to the 4000-ish count: ca. 4400... sorry

Maybe this isn't a real game but they made as small a map as they needed and put units on it just to show off the game.
