I was watching CNN and heard the thread title to describe China, playing on the title of Marxist-Leninist, that got me wondering how China went from Maoist to what is it today, could anyone break it down?
Basically, Deng Xaoping came to power and enabled a lot of free market reforms. However, to give the illusion that his country was still striving for communism, he called it "socialism with Chinese characteristics".
One fun justification they made at the beginning was that in order to have socialism you need to go through capitalism first, and so they were going to do that for a few decades before becoming socialist.
