Hi folks, I'v been reading through the succession games here, and came across this:

ou need luxuries in some form to keep order, either directly or through entertainers. Markets are very nice for promoting celebrations, but are not usually necessary to maintain order (depending on how many non-trade squares the city works).

This is from the new looking viking deity+4 game. It confused me a little with the mention of markets maintaining order.. i was under the impression that they just boosted trade? Does trade have any relation to how happy your towns are?

If you have (3) trade routes it helps with hapiness issues yes. However to prevent rioting cities at Deity +4 is totally diferent then at the normal levels (you start already with black hats) but a marketplaces can help with that issue on lower levels a bit if you got enough arrows (from workertiles). Marketplace is also good in getting extra revenue (by raising taxes and higher revenues by caravan or freight deliveries).

Ach, now i'm totally confused :)

So, having 3 trade routs makes some citizens happy? Or does earning a certain amount of trade for the city improve their happiness?

It is an issue of luxuries. Marketplaces increase luxury production in the city by 50%, so if you are using luxuries to keep order in the city, the marketplace is helpful. Trade routes give extra trade to the city, some of which can also be put to luxuries. The marketplace does not affect caravan deliveries (except that it might allow a city to celebrate); airports and superhighways are the only improvements that do this (along with critical path roads and rails).

Black citizens are "multiple unhappy" innitially due to the riot factor (which reduces base contentment if you have lots of cities); it takes several "points" from a temple/cathedral type structure to make them content, but applying 2 luxuries boosts them all the way to happy. Because deity plus four has only black citizens (beyond establishing 2 cities), luxuries are the method of choice for keeping order in the civilization.

ahh i see. i totally missed their purpose of increasing luxuries. this would make it a little easier, now i see! thanks :)
