Yes, they couldn't trade while at war and I wanted to kill as many of them as I could with my Dromons.

Well to carry on some kind of conversation:
I have recently had a big change of opinion on histograpic games. I was very sure that the Iroquois would be best. I still do think they would be all around the best for most things: Great trait combo, one of the best UUs in the game, can't go wrong there. But I have now change my opinon to Maya for the big one. Why? Extra commerce and production is hard to beat, but when the goal is only pop size those things aren't as important.
Well, how does industrious give more pop? It doesn't in of itself, but when you set the world for warm & wet, all of those extra jungles clear to grassland which is the best food producer compared to plains, so getting extra grasslands is like getting extra food, and food = points, in this case. So I will be taking Maya, with their marginal UU for my huge Histo attempt. Yes, as uninteresting as this news is, I am going against what I said previously and will do a Huge Histo. My current schedule to start this will probably be late in the year, maybe fall.
Feel free to comment on my foolishness about this or anything else.

I noticed on the last update you haven't quite "given up attempting to reenter the QC top ten" yet. Nice job and congratulations on getting within .01 points from the top ten. 
A good Huge Histo attempt would probably put you there to stay for awhile. The Maya look like a good civ to use to me, what level are you going to attempt this game on?

I think you are correct, Marsden. Though, frankly, I think that any agri civ would be good. Mil and seafaring have the advantages of cheap harbors, which help with food.
Agri is the key, of course. Extra food and cheap aqueducts and hospitals.
Scientific, not so useful, unless you count getting SGL's.
Religious - not useful, really, though GW are good.
expansionist is useless, of course, and Inca's aren't very good.
I don't think it's really a coincidence that Maya have the the top spots.

This sums it up for me, but I find I get a perverse satisfaction from using the other civs...I used the Iroq at DG; the Aztecs at Monarch (tho' that game is gone); the Inca at Regent; the Maya at Warlord and the Sumerians at Chieftain.
I'm currently playing an old-fashioned Pangaea game with the Ottos on Emperor but I don't really expect to be able to milk enough out of it to get on the table.
I plan to do another Regent run with the Inca and then a Deity run with the Dutch.
Two things I do like about the Inca are the expansionist ultra-short AA, and no GA for the pyramids--but the former kind of weakens the old QSC stats.
But yeah, if you're gunning for a high spot, Maya is the way to go.
One other thing, which I don't know if it will be worth it which I didn't mention above about the Maya is their UU enslaves, so if I have barbarians on, then I might be able to pick up a bunch of slaves early. I'm just not sure if having barbarians on is worth the extra aggravation of having to cover all the settlers and workers from attacks.
So to sum up, with a wet warm world with barbs, Maya gets the nod. All other situations I'll go with Iroquois.
PrinceMyshkin, I will be on demigod, I don't think I can do better, at least not yet. I remember a time, not so long ago, that to attempt demigod would be impossible. But, I am willing to risk it.

Marsden, if you look back and read through Moonsinger's threads you will see that she also liked the Maya.
Enslavement = less workers to produce and less gpt to support
Industrious = less workers to produce as workers get jobs done faster
If you can put together a good map, a quick early conquest and have the patience to optimize milking you can put up a great score.

I just hope the barbarian slaves are worth the extra bother of having them, as opposed to barbs off. One good thing about milking and owning all the nice land is you can leave the barbs to spawn in the bad areas and their worth 25 gold free. It's fun to kill barb warriors with modern armor 
Well, ok. I'm not trying to be short, but when I'm really "into" a game I don't bother with screen shots or notes or anything, so this will be sparce.
Celts, the best choice for low level 100k by far, 2 sgls right in a row, which is more important that most everything else for the good date, for alpha and writing. 5 scientific opponents, germany, russia, sumeria, persia, ottomans. Chieftain, 60% water, pangea, warm, arid. I think, I cant remember arid or normal, but I know jungle annoyed me the time before and agricultural makes desert ok. I used first sgl for ToA asap, and then the second for the pyramids, then got to republic asap, gifted everyone up to middle age to get the first techs. then researched invention, gunpowder and stopped. I had a lone scientist at times on chemistry, but I never finished it. I build settlers everywhere, kept expanding ICS, crushed in on the AIs and stole all their luxuries. No wars. I had about 150 cities on a small map. I abandoned 2 towns to stay under the domination limit, that was my worst enemy. Besides that, lots and lots of whipping in feudalism, going library, cathedral collusseum, wealth. Irrigation everywhere. towns on wealth have all extra citizens as taxmen.
I was really only trying to beat 1000AD, but I decided to give it maximum effort. It's really weird to not even have half of the culture needed to win only a few turns from the ehd but it growth is not linear, it's like a tangent that curves up sharply. You get over 75% of your culture in the last 100 to 80 turns.
Like so many Civ answers, it depends, or depended in this case.
If I saw a town with only 1 or no surplus food, or size 6 without a river, then I'd whip to get the growth up. Another thing is a citizen working a mountain, since corruption is approaching 95% empire wide, a mountain is worthless, so you can whip in "20" shields and increase growth by 2 food just like that. Plus, if you have to make sure there are enough workable tiles, with tight ICS there is incredible overlap, some times you need to whip some room. All this is besides watching the shield box. If a whip gave less than 4 sheilds, then sometimes I would wait the 1 or 2 turns to save a citizen, but if the growth issue was involved, then sometimes not. There really wasn't a rule I went by, I just sorted through each town and saw how much I could maximize food. I like to think of the extra whipping as "pruning" the population for maximum growth, but I think of a lot of weird things.

Didn't you ever come across something that describes you? Oh well. I must admit, a 100k victory is much more brutal than is sounds compared to domination or conquest, but (cliche coming) you can't make an omlete without breaking some eggs.

I'm doing a 100k at the moment. Can't bring myself to use that whip yet, although i'm going to smash my previous best.

As much as I don't want to admit it, I think I'm going to give up on ever improving my Quartermasters ranking. I'm as high as I am going to be now. I might start some Histographic games, but I'm not sure. I've been trying to replicate my 100k ability again and it's just not happening. 2 SGLs are the key and I can't get them anymore. I've got a game with only 1 and I don't think it's going to make it. 
I don't know if I'm even going to have a game done for this update. Find a map, research alphabet and hope for a leader, then if I get one hope for another. I consistently get Alpha, writing, code of laws, philo, and republic first, but 3% per time that's still not great odds.

A good histo game would really help your QM ranking, Marsden. It'll need to be a Huge map though, DG or higher, so I'd say use the Histographic Challenge as a warm-up.

Believe it or not, I'm a bit intimidated to take on demigod, especially huge. Rather silly, I know, but true. I'm sure I'll get over it. When I submitted my current Histographic entry I was intimidated by Monarch, which is one of the reasons my score is sub optimal. When I'm up against a higher level than I'm comfortable with I take arid cold worlds to limit the amount of nice land to stunt the AIs growth. I played my arid world safe in the knowlege my agricultural trait would make them useable, but I missed the fact that grassland of a warm wet world would be better for total growth after clearing. But it's a learning process, isn't it. You could say I'm behind the curve, as it were.

In general, it is worth more points to go to Huge rather than increase difficulty, especially if you are not comfortable with the difficulty. The difference is that the Huge Histographic tables are more full.
Your 15k Large Monarch game could be over 30k by going to Demigod or Deity Large, or by going to Monarch or Emperor Huge. However, on Large, your game will make it into the HOF tables no matter what, and it is likely to stay on the tables for a LONG time. The same cannot be said for Huge.
Edit: I will note that Huge Demigod has only 7 entries, and no new ones for over 2 years. If you can finish, that would be a good one. Most of the recent Huge attemps go for Emperor or C3C Deity.
