Fast question regarding an uncommon topic:
Playing the 1979 scenario in MGE, I continued playing past the end of the scored game for some reason. Because all the Civs have nukes and frequently used them there was a major pollution problem. Apparently, the more times you have experienced global warming the more squares that are converted to swamp each time, but I had already figured that out.

But suddenly, to my utter astonishment, every single square in the whole world became swamp (except the mountains? I can't remember). Needless to say, the game came to a screeching halt, and I quit a few turns later. Has anyone else experienced this? It can't be very common...

The number of nukes in the ww79 scenario is amazing, but I managed to conquer the world soon enough to avoid global warming.
Look at the save: a frightening number of skulls (but no global warming ;) ).

I've experienced it, I was mucking around with cheat mode and decided to see what happens. Also Civ II shut down for no reason when I got to about year AD 35 000 or something ridiculous like that, strange...

I assume there's a turn counter (?), and if it reached problems at about 35000 AD, it sounds as if it maxed out at 32768 ((2^16)/2). Maybe the errhandler for that closes Civ2 as a result? I might be very wrong though...

What was most interesting, though was that the swamps never appeared more than 1 square away from ocean squares until the very end, when the entire world became swamp (even the areas in central continents far away from lakes).

What was significant about this was I think someone noticed it and incorporated it into Alpha Centauri. It certainly had the same feel, as I was making engineers in my coastal cities more and more frantically to keep them viable, but it was a hopeless race because no matter what I did more and more pollution kept appearing, and the swamps kept expanding until they covered everything, nukes going off everywhere, paratroopers...
It had the exact same frantic, end-of-the-world feel as Alpha Centauri. Fun though...

I must not have been playing for early victory or high score.
Sorry I don't have a .sav file, it was several years and computers ago.
