The birthplace of the Enlightenment, and the first state to implement mandatory education: Scotland has been home to many of the philosophers, scientists, economists, and political theorists who led the way from Medieval to Modern times.

Reap increased Culture and Science from urban centres as you develop hubs of learning.

Train Humanists: a Great Person who creates a unique Relic representing their philosophical or scientific works. These Great People replace Missionaries, making this an alternate way to complete the Culture Legacy Path for Scotland.

Discover unique complementarities with Scotland's Traditions, which turn Science into profit and productivity.

FEEDBACK AREAS
  • Balance: Adjacencies are played with a lot with this Civ. Given Specialists scale off of adjacencies, this might be more powerful than it looks. The Humanists being the new Relic wincon is also tricky: the cost scaling on Humanists may need to be increased.
Any other issues you encounter please let me know asap and I can try to resolve it in a future update!

I played as Scotland last night and enjoyed the experience overall, thank you, but I encountered a limitation with the number of relics available through the humanists. Since I couldn’t create missionaries, my options for obtaining relics to pursue a cultural legacy path were limited to those granted by techs, civics, the humanists, and possibly a few events. After exploring all available avenues, I still ended up three relics short of completing the legacy path. I appreciate the concept behind the humanists, but if religious relic acquisition is blocked, there needs to be a viable alternative. At present, the number of relics accessible through the humanists is too limited; I don’t think religion should be reintroduced, but the pool of potential relics should at least be doubled to support a cultural oriented playstyle. Thanks again for an enjoyable mod.

hello! there should be 10 relics available via humanists, 2 via Scottish civics, and 5 via the default civics trees. plus you usually get a couple from overbuilding and other narrative events.

given you need 12 for the victory, this should be more than enough: if anything i was worried it might be too easy compared to religion.

was the problem that you were finding humanists too expensive to produce later on? in theory you only need five and that shouldn't be prohibitively expensive... i can adjust the cost progression if it is, though.

thank you so much for the feedback! im ofc just one person and cant have a team of playtesters at my disposal to check balance, so its only thanks to responses like this i can improve things.

would love to know more about what the main obstacles were. also were you playing an advanced start? what difficulty? were u pursuing multiple legacy paths? etc

I save just before each age ends so I went back to look at what I was missing. Something went wrong somewhere because it was set to need 24 relics to win and I had 21. Check out the screen captures below. So much for paying attention!
In the great works screen below, you can see that I obtained all 10 of the Scottish relics plus the ones from the tech/civics tree. I don't know what to say. Lastly, you can see the 24 relics applied to everyone as shown on the ranking screen.
I had other modded civilizations loaded so it is not clear which of them caused the doubling the required number of relics. I'll create a new game with Scotland as the only modded civ and see if the problem reoccurs. Strange indeed.

I started a game with Scotland as the only modded civ, but left all my other mods on. It had the requirement of 24 relics (first screen capture). I disabled all my mods, exited Civ, went back in, reenabled Scotland thus it and the mod manager were the only active mods, made a new game and -- 12 relics required (Second screen capture).
Sigh... now the arduous task of determining which mod it is that is causing this problem.

Issue with the relics aside, I enjoyed Scotland and Ireland in the modern age. I certainly will play them again in the future. Thanks for making them.

Edit: I found the mod creating the issue, Goggle's Religions 1.2. I could not find a forum about the mod so I left a message with the information about the bug on his Profile Page. If there is a better place I should put it, I welcome the suggestion.

comforting that it was caused by another mod! aiming for 24 relics would certainly do it lol.

the fact you got so close to 24 does renew my worry that it might actually be too easy though. how did you get so many?? did you perhaps conquer a lot of cities that held relics?

Getting a high number of relics is not hard when you have religion

Sorry, I was just starting to reply when my wife needed something. I was unaware I posted.
Regardless, you should not think my play style is typical. I often give myself a little starting cash to help speed up the initial part of each age. .
