Max number of cities

I made a map that was 256 x 256 and I have reached a point where the I get a msg telling me that no more cities are available. Can anyone tell me what the maximum number is and is there anyway to change this?

Maximum allowed is 512 and it cannot be changed.

And that 512 includes all the AI cities as well. So huge, city-crowded maps are impossible.

Yes, 512 is the limit and it can't be changed. If I may suggest, with that map size don't allow cities on Tundra and Desert. It will work out about right then.
