May I request a new naval unit?

There are a lot of "new unit" threads kicking around, so I'll just add mine to the list. Christmas is coming awfully quick, and I was hoping someone might be interested in adding a new modern naval unit like a frigate ?

I could look for pics of one, but I'll wait and see if there's any interest first. Maybe one can be converted from another game or something... any ideas, etc?

Thanks.:)

I might be interested in creating a naval unit, but not sure if I can manage before christmas, but I am sure before new year ;)

If you would post a good picture, or tell me where I can look for one I will start the work once I am done with my current project, the Crossbowman. My Crossbowman is almost there, I have completed Default, Run, Fidget and 90% of Fortify. All I am left is death and attack which I should be able to cover tomorrow. Doing these animation is tougher than I thought :D

Okay, I got a few pics all of the same class of frigate, for consistency. I tried to get coverage for all the angles, but damned if all ship photos mostly look the same!:(

The reason I mostly want to add this unit is to complete the modern fleet make-up. In Civ the Battleship has always been supreme, even after Carriers (which I think is funny because they include the two together with the same tech!). I'd like to add new ships that would provide a more balanced and "modern" fleet, eventually render it pointless and overly expensive, but not "obsolete" in the civ sense of the word, to build battleships.

You can check my replay in "Civ3 - Creation & Customization > New units to be added to the game" thread.
My Navy Spreadsheet includes 42 naval units (instead 14 from Fraxis) from CANOE till FUTURE CRUISER and FUTURE CARRIER. Also, I put them on timeline and made picture for each of them.

From the looks of all the image you have attached, I believe it isn't too hard to convert the current destroyer image to make it look like what is shown in the image. ;)

One question though, is this suppose to be a missile frigate ? If it is then I might need to make the attack showing shooting of missile rather than firing guns :D

Yes, it's definitely a missile frigate :)

I was also thinking that converting the destroyer'd be the best way, just give it a different profile.

edit: Dark Sheer, your reply got me thinking that there wasn't a great deal of difference between the icon used for the destroyer. So I went looking for info on size difference-- there really isn't one, only a few meters here and there. So I went looking for a more distinctive looking design and came up with (drumroll please) the Oliver Hazard Perry class of U.S. frigates. ;)

What do you think? I think it has a more individual look to it, while still being able to convert the destroyer icon.

Good source of images and photo !!

If with all this I still cannot create that unit I will scrap my PC ;)

Now all I need is the relative size of the Frigate to a destroyer :D

Glad you liked the pics :)

I went looking for size comparisons, but I can't find any (I was hoping for a silhouette chart, couldn't even find a pic with them together), so I did the next best thing.

Arleigh Burke-class destroyer vs. Oliver Hazard Perry Frigate:

Destroyer
-length: 509 1/2 ft. (155.29 meters)
-Beam: 59 ft. (18 meters)
-Displacement: 8,300 tons full load.

Frigate
-Length: 445 ft. (133.5 meters)
-Beam: 45 ft. (13.5 meters)
-Displacement: 4,100 tons full load.

So, the frigate is only a little shorter, and definitely slimmer, and WAY less beefy. Hope this is okay for you. ;)

Yup, thats good enough :)

I will get to work on it as soon as possible. My crossbowman project got delayed a little no thanks to some 3 hours blackout at my area today :( No early notice too!! Damn National Energy Company :midfinger

Still manage to get it 90% done, just gotta play Civ3 less ;)

All I am left now is attack which is not that easy if I want it to look good. Just got one direction done, 7 more to go  Why can't middle ages unit wear plain cloths? :( I hate coloring those plate armor !! Oh well..

Great, thanks! If I can help any more, just ask :) I'm going to away for a couple of days this christmas, but I might still be lurking around the forums, and since I won't have civ to play for nearly three long days... oh, It'll be tough...

Also, crossbowman-- very cool. Can't wait to check that out.:D

My lord that is a lot of good info. Just keeps getting more detailed as you go. I was expecting to get to the bottom of the thread and find info on toilet placement in Frigates, average flush per hour, flush velocity, and how they compare to Battleship toilets.

Maugan :

Thats a good one!! Toilet flush velocity ?? :rotfl:
You make danny lost for words !!

I am now in the course of studying all those picture and comparing them with the destroyer flc. I will start the project within 1-2 days ;) I am just wondering, I can't seems to find the missile silo in those frigate photos, do they use vertical launch (ie the launcher is on the upper deck) ?

Anyway, Merry Christmas to ya, danny :santa:

Well. That took a little longer than I thought, and I'm still not absolutely sure I got it right .
Check the side drawing of it above, I circled the weapon system I think is used for Harpoon SSM's. I'd thought it was only for SAMs, but i think it may be used for both? I'm not an expert so I might be off here, but I did search for about two hours (I can't sleep :) ), and this was the best I could do.

Anyway, good luck, and merry christmas to you too.

(P.S. I couldn't find the locations of the toilets either ;)

I looked around for info about the above post and I found out that the Ticonderoga Class Guided Missile Cruiser

CG47-CG51
Missiles launched from fore and aft twin rail launchers

CG52-CG73
Missiles launched from 2 forward mounted
Vertical Launch Systems (VLS)

I hope this will help

Later
