Me and automatic patching

First, let me apologise. I got screwed by the patch yesterday and vented on the forum here. I apologise for any offence my launguage caused.

Before the thread got closed, certain posters suggested I turn off automatic patching. Well, I've been flicking through the steam menus and settings and can't find the option anywhere.

How do I turn off automatic patching on Steam, without going offline? I'd be grateful.

go to steam library, right click on Civ5, properties, updates tab, you'll see several options there.

It's not possible.

There is an option to "not download updated immediately" but Steam will still download and install the patch when you launch the game.

The only way to disable automatic patching is putting Steam in offline mode.

And that will only work for some time because you can't stay in offline mode forever, after some months Steam will ask you to go online.

Presumably you could switch to offline mode every time you start Civ 5, or will it eventually stop you doing that too?

Waywocket - you have to keep it offline ALL THE TIME - Steam starts downloading the patch immediately when it goes online, regardless of you playing Civ or not.

One thing I noticed this morning when Steam started downloading the Civ V patch is that there was a Pause button in the "Downloading Items" page (the one where you can check what Steam is downloading and what's the progress). Does anyone know if that button actually works? I didn't try it, because I have no game in progress, so it's a good moment to install a save-breaking patch.

The pause button pauses the download; so if all your wanting to do is delay the rest of the download that works.

However, by the time it started the download it already marked your local file as old so you won't be able to launch the app until you unpause it and it completes downloading.

If you don't want a patch you indeed need to have taken steam offline before steam starts shipping it out.

Damn, that's harsh. I know it's not easy, but Firaxis should really focus on not breaking saves with their patches, considering how difficult it is to dodge a patch.

if you make a backup of files while in offline mode, you can go online with it, do your business then go offline mode and delete the "patched" game and remove "copy" from the name of the copied folder.

that way when you go back to offline mode you can play a "de-patched" version, but you will have to always keep a copy of your older files.

You sure about this? I've got Steam caged right now and it's never asked me to go online. I'm still on patch 383 (I think that's the number).

I'm glad someone got something out of it.....

But honestly, if it really is not possible to disable auto-patching then someone in Firaxis is more than seriously incompetent - they are a complete and utter amateur. I can't imagine any serious professional company in the real world getting away with selling a product and then delivering a product breaking upgrade to their users without releasing a timely and well publicised warning about the dangers of said upgrade.

I demanded an apology from them on the 2K forum - and 2K greg apologised, sort of. He said sorry about your trouble, and then threatened me with a ban for insulting the game company because I had asked if they were either amateurs or comedians.
Oh well, over sensitive game companies. There's nothing new about that. What about my feelings? Boo hoo

CIV5 has been a frustration-game since the start, the ppl that created it are sacked and now they're trying to "fix" it.

I hope they sorted out some of these issues in Gods and Kings.

It's ironic, I've been a civ V supporters - until now. I know it's had many many problems. But I'm one of the gamers who really like the game as it stands right now. Hence my frustration when they screwed two of my saves.

click new game is my best advice.

Guess we'll see. I booted up in Windows so I could compare performance and other quirks between the two versions since I usually play on Mac. Then again, it may still be rough to make the comparison because it seems like the Mac version runs smoother to begin with.
