me & my ATI

When I load up Civilization 4 and start a new game, everything in the game renders fine, but the usual case is as soon as I press a key or click the mouse the game shuts down to the desktop. For a long time, the issue was just with key presses, now its moved to both use of the keyboard and the mouse. A few times I've had it shut down with just mouse movement but this isn't the general case.

Recently I apply the Civilization 4 patch, and the only difference is that now whenever it shuts down it gives me an error dialog.

On this computer, which is relatively new (an AMD notebook with a Radeon Mobility ATI Xpress 200M integrated card) I've also experienced other games shut down to the desktop (generally, no error dialog) with a key press. For instance with Sim City 4 when I would press the ctrl key it would shut down. Another older game, Arx Fatalis, which was able to run on my older laptop which didn't have 3d acceleration, shuts down when it first goes to render the 3d graphics.

I've tried downloading older drivers which are said to be more stable, and the 'omega' drivers (and other common suggestions to fix problems), but there is no change. Sometimes after I remove the driver and install a different one Civilization 4 runs ok, but then after a few times of starting the game, the issue comes up again. Sometimes when I reinstall Civilization it runs ok, but the issue comes up again soon.

dxdiag shows no problems. When I run the ATI Catalyst control center and go to 3d settings, the 3d preview display is disabled, I don't know if this is normal.

I sometimes have odd messages with my Synaptics touchpad. The usual thing is when another mouse is detected you're supposed to get a message that some touchpad features have been disabled. Sometimes I get this message just when I adjust volume or mute with the buttons on the laptop. I don't get the message when I connect a USB mouse, like I would expect.

I've contacted HP, the manufacturer, but they haven't been very helpful. First they gave instructions to reinstall the driver, which I had already tried, and when I told them this, I was given instructions to repartition/reformat my drive. I knew that wouldn't be helpful at all, though at some point I decided to do it. Civilization 4 did work ok at first, like with the other scenarios, then started having the issue after loading it a few times.

I've also had problems related to overheating. When I was booting from the Windows CD to repartition my drive, the computer kept shutting down, and the only way to finish the process was to put an ice pack underneath. When Civilization 4 was able to play fine, once in a while (not often) the computer shut down from overheating.

Please anyone help or advise me. If any of the report information from the error dialog would help, tell me.

Thanks,

I had exactly the same problem as you have described, running ATI Radeon 9000 128Mb graphics card on Athlon 2400+ 1Gb RAM.

I have reinstalled the game three times, checked latest Direct X etc.
I tried latest ATI drivers, older drivers 4.12 recommended in these forums. Tried the suggestions in the Civ 4 support section but nothing worked.

Then...by chance...
I was trying to join the new massive multiplayer game Dark and Light, which failed on launch directing me to 'update my Indeo Codec for my graphics card.'

You are supposed to use the specific Indeo codec version for your particular computer graphics card, but I just picked one that another ATI user suggested at this download...

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Indeo_Codec.htm

Since I installed the V5 codec above, I have not experienced any problems with Civ 4. Whereas it would crash either to desktop or even power off my computer randomly, particulary at the Civ screen menus.

I honestly have no idea what Indeo Codec do in relation to the graphics.. but I can say..so far my problems have gone away. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, as you know the problem can be very irregular and intermittent, sometimes failing repeatedly and often, other times you get a bit of a break and it works.

Good luck if you try it as another step towards a fix.

Stepping back a bit from the detail and viewing it from afar, the hassles you have had, did they tend to occur within the same broad time frame ?? (no matter what you were doing at the time). Very broadly, like, always within 1-2hours of starting up, or always 2-4 hours of start up- whatever.

Its just the last paragraph tinkled a few bells re case cooling etc - an obvious point I know, but easy to miss when all is crashing round your ears

Telovne

An interesting post - I've learnt something there. Did your contact say how to get the designation of the right Codec ? I have a card problem, not connected with Civ IV hassles, may be worth trying that. Mine is a Radeon Pro 128mb - using it as I type, but the 3D side is foul (done all the usual drivers, declocking etc get the hassle in all 3D games & 3DMark5, same symptoms exactly in all situations)

zydor,

if you're asking about the time frame in playing the game, they occur (generally) the first time i press a key or click the mouse in the game, so at startup.

if youre talking about time frame after the computer is started, ive tried playing after the computer has been off a while and that doesn't seem to affect the situation.

telovne, installing that driver doesn't seem to help either
