I tried both newer MechWarrior games and frankly, the control system is just fail for the PC. Just like console FPS controls suck. FPS are made for comp, imo, and this type of third-person game is made for console. For good examples of mech combat, see Armored Core 2 and 3. Perhaps 4, I haven't played it yet though.

you can play in first person

as a matter of fact the game is pretty much a FPS

I always play it first person. Playing in third person just seems stupid if you try to enjoy it as a "simulation".
