Hello all you Civ Fanatics, Ive been a member here for some time but have never been very active. I am often found over at poly commenting on the stories in the Civ3 stories section there.

I do often come here and read the stories too but find that poly eats up much of my available time to post. Ive often noticed some of the regular writers post both here and on poly I suppose to get more circulation for their good works.

Anyway Im going to attempt to post a story I wrote over at poly some time ago in the hopes that some of you guys here will enjoy it. I,ll do it in bits to give you time to get into it.

It was well received over at poly winning in their regular contest, hope you enjoy here also. :)

PART 1 The Departure,
Young Mike Richards was just fourteen when his family had moved from the mining town of Leeds, his father was a master stonemason, and the family had been one of the first to settle in the area when his grandfather had helped to build the then new town, many years ago.

Jack Richards,Mikes father was looking forward to his new challenge and hoping to train young Mike as his apprentice,he would be the fourth generation of the Richards family to become a master stonemason. At least thats what Jack had in mind.

Mike really didnt want to leave,he was an only child and would really miss all his friends, especially Jess his sweetheart. She was a miners daughter and Mikes age, with long blond hair and deep blue eyes. Although both too young to be seriously committed to one another, Mike felt a strong love for her and was sure he would marry her as soon as they were old enough.

"Mike! come on now will you or well miss the ship from Bristol"said Betty Mikes mother, she was a tall slim woman with a kind heart."Say goodbye now to Jess we really do have to go."

"Well goodbye then Jess I suppose Id better go,"he said sniffing with a tear on his cheek.

"I wish you didnt have to go please dont go," Jess said crying.

"Right now," barked Jack and climbed into the carriage with his wife.

"Okay Im coming,Ill write as soon as I get to London Jess I, I, Ill miss you" he said and he gave her a kiss, they were both still young and didnt really know how to deal with such intense emotions. Jack climbed into the waiting carriage and turned to look at Jess as it pulled away, his mum reached for his arm and comforted him.

The Richards were off to London the capitol of the British Empire, as were many other construction workers and their families. The Queen had commissioned the building of a great wonder in the capitol
"The Sistine Chapel". Every available skilled labourer from the colonies was on there way back to England to assist in the project as there was a race to complete it with the French and the Chinese.

The voyage aboard HMS "The Queen Of The Sea" an ocean going Galleon class transport vessel, one of the first ships of its kind in the world took several weeks to cross the Western English Ocean. So called by the first english sailors to circumnavigate the expanse of water between England and New England many years ago in their Galleys, after the construction of the Great Lighthouse in Birmingham almost four hundred and seventy years ago.

One thing that England had always excelled in was naval exploration, and they had the largest most powerful navy in the world. Trade flourished on these waters under the protection of the British Man Of War's, huge Frigate class wooden sailing gun ships.

PART 2 Bad News On Arrival,
Mike stood on the middeck above the main cargo hold and looked out across the water in utter amazement as the English flagship,
HMS Elizabeth sailed towards them to escort them into Londons harbour. She was an impressive sight in full sail bristling with over one hundred guns.

"There will be many more like her in port son" Mikes dad said as he put his strong arm around Mikes shoulder,"best get below now and help your mother to pack,we should be in London in a few hours."

"Okay Pa " he said as he left the deck and went below to his cabin.

The evening sun was setting as the ship sailed slowly into harbour, the scene was very dramatic with well over a hundred vessels of all description going about their business, some being loaded and unloaded, others sailing out to sea and others at anchor in the bay. Even at this time of day Londons docks were a hive of activity.

As the Queen Of The Sea slid effortlessly into port Mikes dad noticed several divisions of Calvary and Musketmen embarking onto three ships at the Royal Barracks quayside, with four frigates close by. Whats going on he thought to himself. Then he spotted bustle of activity at the Royal Drydock with what looked like three Caravel class transport vessels being refitted and upgraded and at least three Man O War's under construction.

The ship moored up at the quayside and the passengers began to disembark, just then a unit of Musketmen came aboard up the gangplank, one of them pushed young Mike out of the way and he heard the officer tell the captain to take the ship to the barracks as soon as they had unloaded their cargo.

"Whats happening Jack?" asked Betty.

"Im not sure love, but it doesnt look good!" he replied, "we best go find our digs, Mike get those bags will you."

"Sure Pa" Mike said as he gawked at the Musketmen in their orange uniforms and their muskets by their sides.

Mike was immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of the docklands. Fish of all descriptions freshly landed for market, Spices from India, Gems from the Republic of Rome and Chinese Incense then he spotted the news stand with headline "WAR."

"Hey Pa! Look at this!" he shouted.

"Oh my god!" said Betty "theyve attacked Leeds"

"Whos attacked? what the? give me that paper will you woman!" Jack snatched the paper from Betty" my god your right! the Russians have surrounded Leeds, they declared war two weeks ago, theyve destroyed three cities and are now outside Leeds itself. Oh my god theyve burned Newcatle, Bristol and Newquay to the ground, oh no what about Jimmy and his family Sally and the kids?"

Mike had never seen his father cry before, his mum put her arms around Jack and comforted him. Jim was Jacks brother and they had stayed with them in Bristol the night before they had set sail for England, just three weeks ago, but Mike could only think about Jess and he too began to cry with his parents.

The Russian nation had long since envied the English, and despised the fact that they had settled on part of their continent. Known to the world as new England one of the colonies of the British Empire. Of course Russia had been a very small and backward nation back then nearly four hundred years ago and there had been plenty of room to build new cities.
The English could have expanded across the entire continent unchallenged at the time, but the Queens policy was to simply set up small communities to increase and control world trade. At the time the Queen dictated that four new towns would be established, to act as safe harbour to British shipping and to mine the rich Iron and Gold deposits where leeds was founded.
This strategy had made England a very rich nation indeed.

The English government had always been very generous to the Russians and had granted them maps and technology, to promote growth in the hope she would become a strong ally and trading partner. On occasions some of the smaller Russian border towns had petitioned the Queen to allow them to become British citizens but HRH Elizabeths goverment always refused to ensure peace. But now the Russians had decided to bite the hand that had always fed them, they had razed three English cities (one could only begin to imagine what had become of the inhabitants)and were surrounding Leeds in what was to become the bloodiest battle the world had ever seen.

Later at the Richards new digs Jack read the rest of the news to his family,"it says here that those troops we saw getting aboard the ships in port are heading for Leeds, I only hope they can make it in time."

Well heres the 3rd part over two posts, parts 3a and 3b.

PART 3 A The Siege Of Leeds

In the weeks that followed there were news reports coming in from Leeds sporadically, making it difficult for the public back in England to know what was really happening at the front. Many people were anxious about the welfare of loved ones who lived in the former colony. Many reports about the bravery of the British forces defending Leeds managed to trickle through but no information about civillians or casualties was released for fear it would ignite riots.

Leeds itself was a natural fortress founded on the ore rich hills, and the Russian offensive had temporarily ground to a halt, laying siege to the city and attempting to assault when ever fresh reinforcements arrived at the front. Leeds had a small harbour on its north side making it possible for some supplies to get through but even so things were now dire, and the commander of the garrison was about to discuss terms for surrender when on the horizon, a fleet of British warships and transports were spotted approaching fromthe north east.

This fact was also taken in by the Russian forces who mounted another immediate desperate assault to breach the city walls before the reinforcments could land. Though they did not succeed in taking the old walled city they smashad the remaining English outer perimeter defenses, enabling them to entrench in the now unoccupied English trenches and bring up their cannon for a final assault.

Meanwhile the fighting had been so intense for most of the day that the Galleons had arrived in the harbour, and started to unload their cargo of men and supplies, but they came under fire from Russian gun emplacments along the cliffs to both sides of the harbour. The Queen Of The Sea was badly damaged and fiercly ablaze and many of the soldiers onboard did not make ashore.

The escorting frigates began to bombard the Russian posistions and managed to force them back from the clifftops. HMS Elizabeth took severe damage from this action then suddenly three Russian Caravels rounded the cove and attacked the Elizabeth in unison. She sank like a stone in a ball of fire and violent explosions, the entire crew of 865 men were lost. The remaining four escort ships who were of a far sleeker design than the flagship intercepted the Russians and all three ships were sent to the bottom of the sea. England was now beginning to count the human and material cost of this war.

In the city the offensive had again ceased as the Russian troops had there hands full dealing with booby traps left by the retreating English, and small isolated pockets of resistence in the streets and buildings. British snipers being among the best marksmen in the world.

PART 3 B The continued Struggle For Leeds

As evening drew closer the guns finally fell silent, giving the people of the city a brief respite, the miliatary busied themselves with the task of loading the bodies of the dead and the wounded onto the three seaworthy Galleons in the harbour. The civillians helped by sewing the corpses into anything they could find, linen, old fishing nets and any spare sail to be found. The captains were to dispose of the dead when safely out to sea out of range of Russian guns.

Under cover of darkness the ships slipped out of port, two of the escorts HMS Valiant and HMS Seagull stayed offshore to patrol the waters, and prevent the Russians from blockading Leeds. The sinking of the Elizabeth although a tragedy bolstered the resolve of the English sailors, and they were more than a match for the feeble Russian Fleet.

Unbeknown to the garrison in Leeds another fleet with reinforcements was on its way from London, but this was still 7or 8 days out. Back home in England the people waited, longing for any news of situation, hoping beyond hope that the second fleet would get there in time. It was far larger than the first with a large number of cannon and vast supplies of amnunition.

But for now as night envelloped the beleagured city all was at last peace, a chance to get some much needed sleep.

It was a completley different story among the Russian lines, as masses of reinforcments arrived at the front. There seemed to be an endless supply of fresh men and equipment available to the Russian commanders. It was certainly true that Russia had grown to become a large powerful nation and was thought to have the largest standing army in the world. Woe to the English now for having taught them all their secrets of weaponary and warfare. In particular the russians excelled in their training of calvary known as the Cossacks the most revered miliatary units in the world to date.

The following morning at 5.00 am the British commanders from every regiment in Leeds were meeting in the town hall, now being used as the field command centre, to discuss options for a possible counter attack, when it started. The Russian guns opened up, it was all too obvious that the big push had begun. The bombardment was concentrated on the south walls of the city, so every available Musketman was stationed as close as possible, ready to take up defensive posistions if a breach should occur.

The 3 divisions of calvary around three thousand men, and the remnants of four other divisions making up another seven hundred quickly manouvered to the east side of the city. At around 7.00 am local time a massive section of the southern wall finally collapsed and almost simultaneously around ten thousand Russian Cossack Calvary began their charge into the jaws of death.

The defenders quickly arranged themselves into three ranks atop the rubble of the gaping one hundred foot breach in the southern wall. Many more were on rooftops, in buildings or any place they could find that afforded the opportunity to send their foe to hell. Systematically the front rank let rip its volley and dashed back behind their comrades in the rear to reload, whilst the next rank took aim and fired. It was textbook precision, typical of the well disciplined British forces.

The Russian commanders may have had the advantage of numbers, but they lacked strategic acumen. They fell like corn to a scythe, charging headlong into a hail of musket balls and small cannon fire.

The eastern gates opened to release the eager English Calvary, there task to rout the Russian gun emplacements, and counter attack the main assault force from the flank. The initial charge of the Cossacks stalled, but the Russian cannons burst back into life decimating the ranks of defending Musketmen, seemingly though oblivious to the fact that they were also bombarding their own men.

As the English Calvary came within sight of the enemy they tried to turn the guns on them, but to no avail. They were on them in no time and as the cannon fire had now ceased, the defenders inside the city regrouped.
The Cossacks too had rallied and still around six and a half thousand strong renewed their attack against the now lessened resistance.

Meanwhile although acheiving there main objective, having destroyed the Russian cannons, the calvary came under severe fire from entrenched Russian Musketmen. Taking large casualties they were routed from the field, and could not possibly attack from the flank without running through a barrage of enemy fire.
Unlike their Russian counterparts the English officers valued the lives of their men, and sounded the retreat.

Back at the southside the Russian forces now even smaller and mostly on foot were engaging the British in close combat with guns and swords. As the surviving calvary reentered the city they were told to dismount and go to strenghen the line. The Russians although a tough race lacked the discipline to fight effectively and were being massacared. At twelve noon after five hours of fighting the Russians sounded the retreat, finally realising that today Leeds would not fall.

A cheer went up from the British all along the line, Over six thousand Russians and around two thousand English men had lost their lives with many more wounded.

Sadly within a week the garrison fell and the Russians captured Leeds, Two days before the fleet would have arrived.

Heres a map showing the world and Englands colonial posessions prior to the war with Russia.

It sounds good; shows promise. :-) was this a Civ game u played? Or just a story you thought up inside your head?

@lmsw08233, it was a bit of both really. I loosely based the story around a certain game I had played but in the main I created the story in my head. Another source of inspiration was a story by WTE_OZWOLF (I think Ive got his name right) called "The Cost Of War". I read that story over at Apolyton you should search it out its brilliant, though set in a later era than this. I think OZ used to post his stuff here as well so it may well be archived here also :)

@Ancient Grudge, Some coming straight after this post :) thanks for the feedback.

PART 4 A New Constitution

The war had caused much upheavel back in England, and the risk of the goverment collapsing was a very real danger. Jack Richards set off on his way to work as usual but not to the site of the Sistine Chapel, in the latest of what could only be described as drastic changes of policy, all work had ceased and been transfered to another project.

In a press release to be in that days news the Queen explained the reasons for shifting policy, and building a new modern Naval Technology Foundation in the grounds of the Royal Admiralty. It was to be known as
Magglellans Voyage and would become a centre of excellence for ship design and innovation. This was yet another issue that would not go down well with the public.

The war was over! Russia had not destroyed Leeds, probably due to its vast mining infrastructure. Although it was not known what had become of its citizens. The Queen had sued for peace to allow trade to recommence, the worlds merchant fleets had been to frightened to put to sea during the recent hostilities, and some luxury goods were beginning to run out.

The government had decided that with the loss of Leeds it was impossible to prosper in any way from the continuation of the war. New England was simply to far away, even with the worlds most advanced ships it took a three week voyage to get there. The second fleet was called back to England.

Mike was starting at his new school today, Bettys cousin Sir Timothy Hughes was the Headmaster of one of Londons better schools, and she had managed to talk him into giving Mike a scholarship. The fact that Mike was fluent in Russian was the winning factor however. Mike did not realise it yet but this was going to change his life, this was the beginning of his destiny.

"Mum Ive written a letter for Jess, do you think Ill be able to post it?" he asked his Mum.

"Leave it with me" she shouted from upstairs "Ill post it for you when I go shopping, now run along to school or youll be late" she said.

"Okay bye Mum" Mike shouted back as he closed the door. As he walked along the pavement his mind drifted back to happier times with his friends in Leeds. This only made sad and angry, he couldnt bear to think what may of happened to Jess and all his friends. He knew that Jess may not still be alive but he blanked that thought out, I hate the Russians! I want to kill them all, he thought to himself, Im going to join the Army and kill them all!. He remembered the Musketmen hed seen at the docks the night they had arrived in London, thats what Im going to be he thought to himself.

That evening Jack arrived home from work, Mike and Betty were waiting at the table in the kitchen for him. Betty always liked to have the three of them eat together, its what makes a family special she always said.

"Hello Son had a good day at school?" he asked and he gave Betty a peck on the cheek "hello love, whats for tea? ooh lobby me favourite."

"Wash your hands and sit yourself down, Ill serve it up now" Betty said.

"Mum did you remember to post my letter? whats that you got dad?" asked Mike.

"Yes son I did, now eat up your stew" she said.

"Its an official government notice lad, theres going to be an election. Dont really understand it myself yet but it seems that the government wants to become a democracy, and it wants to write something called a new constitution." Jack told Mike "Hey Betty it says that the Queen will have no say in goverment policy if this happens. Due to the current political unrest in the country at the moment , it says that the Queen has agreed to let the people decide how they want to be governed."

"Never mind all that now" said Betty "eat up your stew before it gets cold will you."

Later that evening Mike asked his father what a democracy was, he knew England was a monarchy and that Elizabeth the Queen was the monarch. Hed also heard of the Roman Republic although he had no idea what that meant.

"Well Son it says here that a democracy is a new form of government, a new concept in government to be correct. With whats happened with the war and all the Queen has had to agree to hold elections to avoid a civil war."

"But whats an election Pa?"

"Well it says here that every man over the age of 25 years old in the empire will get to vote for the government they want to run the empire. If most of them vote for the Queen then we will stay as a monarchy, if not we will become a democracy, the first in the world!!" Jack replied.

"Who will you vote for Pa?" asked Mike.

"To be honest Im not really sure lad, now come on lets be having you off to bed now" said Jack,

"Okay Pa, night mum night dad" said young Mike.

"Say Betty what letter was our Mike on about earlier?" Jack asked.

"Oh hes wrote to Jess, I took it down to the post office today" she replied.

"Lets hope shes okay! for Mikes sake. Did you ask if their was any news of refugees love?"

"Yes darling, Im sorry they couldnt tell me anything, try not to worry to much Im sure Jim, Sally and the kids will be alright."said Betty rubbing Jacks tired shoulders.

"I hope your right Betty" said Jack as a tear rolled down his cheek.

PART 5 A Change Of National Policies.
The impact of the results of the worlds first democratic elections and Mikes new educational direction. A time of much diplomatic intrigue.

PART 5 A Change Of National Policies.

In the months following the cessation of hostilities between England and Russia, there had been much diplomatic manouvering going on. Publicly every nation condemned Russia's unprovoked attack on the unsuspecting British cities, and the vile atrocities of which they stood accused. Privately most nations traded with them such is the lure of wealth, and the nature of politics.

Even six months after the wars end, Catherine The Great still refused to acknowledge British envoys of the new democratic government of the "United Kingdom Of Great Britain" and the "Commonwealth Of Former Colonies".

The election had been a landslide, and the democratic front was now the ruling party, and its first Prime Minister the right honourable Sir Timothy Hughes MP had been sworn in.

In its first public debate the goverment launched the white paper "The State Of The Empire". Every community throughout the British territories were consulted and polled on the issues for change to the constitution and national policies.

the following is a list of the immediate changes that were implemented as a result of the process.

1/ All existing colonies to be granted independance and the right to self govern. Miliatary and Naval protection will be provided by the mother country for as long as this is required.

2/ The creation of a new commonwealth of nations initially comprising England and the former colonial states. Membership was to be offered to other nations at a later date, and upon meeting certain criteria.

3/ Parliamentary Elections to be held every seven years to help to maintain this new democracy.

4/ The Royal family was to be maintained by the state, and were to become ambassadors for the country, and theguardians of tradition and heritage.

5/ The existing war department to be closed and two new ministeries set up in its place, The ministery for Naval Affairs, and the Ministery for Land Based defenses.

6/ New ministeries set up for Health, Education, Trade, Science, Production, Culture and foreign affairs.

7/ A new treasury department for the planning and implementation of the national budget, and the collection of taxes.

8/ A massive nationwide building and modernisation programme, each city was to have its own Officer of Construction responsible for overseeing the building, upgrading and maintenance of all amenity buildings.

That first Christmas after the war almost nine and a half months ago was a bitter sweet time for Mikes family. It was Christmas Eve and the Richards were just arriving home from midnight mass. Not the digs they had moved into when they had first arrived in London, but their new Kensington townhouse. Probably the most fashionable residentrial area of London.

Jack had been a foreman on the naval academy, and his natural ability to supervise a major project and his flair for man and resource management had assisted in the completion of the Maglellans Journey two months ahead of schedule. This was rewarded by the Queen and Jack became Londons first Officer of construction. Many thought that the PM had personally appointed Jack because of his family connections.

Mikes life was also about to change quite radically, aged fifteen now he asked his parents to permit him to attend the new miliatary academy at Sandhurst, where he hoped to become an officer in the British forces. Mike had been offered a place at the accademy, this was a great opportunity for him, the son of a stonemason.

Jack was somewhat upset that Mike was not going to be the next generation of the Richards family to be a stonemason , but he knew this was an opportunity not to be missed for his son. As the family prepared to celebrate christmas and there new found good fortune,
they received the news of the plight of the people of Bristol.

English diplomats had finally managed to get to speak to the Russian leader, and had news of the ethnic cleansing carried out by Russian forces in the field, and it was now most likely that all were dead.

Mike also, after months of sending letters to Leeds in the hope of finding out if Jess was still alive had not received any news, and was now beginning to lose hope.

PART 6 Reparations
The Democratic Front looked set to win their second term in office, there first six and a half years in power had been the most profitable period in British history. It had been a massive gamble to grant independance to the colonies, but had proved to be a real success. On the one hand it prevented other nations from saying that England was occupying their continent, and on the other hand it had given a huge increase in trading revenues throughout the new commonwealth.

Sir Timothy Hughes MP was standing for reelection, in his parties manifesto it described how with new technology and discoveries under their leadership the size, range and power of the Royal Navy had greatly increased. Furthermore all divisions of Musketmen had been retrained to use the new weapons called rifles and an extra 30 divisions had been created and trained.
These new weapons were said to be far more accurate at greater range and were much easier to reload with the revolutionary bullets for amnunition.

One thing the English had learned from the war with Russia was to stop selling technological know how to other nations. The United Kingdom was the richest, most advanced and most powerful nation on both sea and land.

Mike now aged 21 was walking with his father, it was a fine summers morning and both men felt at ease with the world. They were heading for the docklands to a political rally to hear cousin Tim speak.

"Look there Mike!" said Jack "its our old digs where we stayed all those years ago,"now one of Londons wealthiest men.

"My word, dont it look small hey Pa," said Mike.

"Not half, I dont think your Mum would want to come back, well not now any way. Ah here we are lets hear what he has to say,"replied Jack.

"Friends I come here today to tell you why you should vote for us, you all know of my parties achievements in government over the last almost seven years. Why would any of you want to vote for our opponents, The Republicans want to increase your taxes and place many new restrictions on your freedoms, while the All England party want to revert to system of power sharing with the monarchy. I say we dont want to go backwards and we dont want to stand still and be shackled. What we want is more, more progress, more wealth and more power."Spoke Sir Timothy to the cheering crowds.

"Hes a great! man he really has done us proud," Jack said to Mike.

"He certainly has Pa!, did I tell you Ive got to go and meet him after my passing out?" Mike asked.

"Friends we are on the verge of a revolution in our nation, one that will change the ways in which we think, and will revolutionise the way we do the things of our everyday lives. This will be an Industrial Revolution! and there will be more jobs, higher wages and lower taxes."

"Hooray!, Hooray!" shouted Jack trying to be heard above the crowd.

"Yes thats right lower taxes! how? well we pledge to initiate a nationwide program to build a new railroad network to service every city in the country. This is forcasted to greatly increase growth and trade revenues that we will give back to you the people" continued the Prime Minister.

"Fancy a pint lad?" Jack asked Mike.

"Yes why not" replied Mike and they headed off to the pub.

Mike had spent the last six years of his life intensivley training to become a high ranking officer in the British armed forces. In his heart still burned the hatred for the Russians who had killed his first love Jess, at least he assumed she had been killed has there had never been any word from Leeds. He had travelled all over the world to the former colonies whilst on exercise, and had been to every nations capitol city except for Moscow and Salamanca. Relations were still strained between the two nations. He had now finally come to the end of his training and was to receive his first commission from the Queen at Windsor in two days time.

"Hello Mum were home!" shouted Mike down the hallway.

"About time too" said Betty "Ive had your dinner ready for over an hour."

The Richards were very wealthy now and had domestic staff to run the household, but whenever Mike was home on leave Betty would always cook his favourite meal.

"Ah great! lobby me favourite, hiccup" said Jack slightly drunk.

"I see youve been to the pub then, oh well never mind, like father like son," said Betty "now go and wash up while I put your dinner out."

While they were eating Jack asked Mike "so why does the PM want to see you then Mike?"

"Im not really sure, but I think its got something to do with the Russians!" said Mike.

"Oh my god! theres not going to be another war is there Son?" said Betty quite alarmed.

"No Mum, well I dont think so" said Mike, "its all a bit hush hush at the moment but the government has been holding secret talks with the Russians for nearly a year now.

"Secret talks, what sort of secret talks?" asked Jack.

"You must promise not to repeat this to a soul!, I only know this because Ive been cousin Tims translator during the talks. We have demanded the return of Leeds to British sovereignty and the evacuation of the cities built in the former New England territory plus the sum of 50 million pounds sterling in reparations for the atrocities committed by the Russian army." Mike explained, "Or we will initiate trde embergos with all other nations and the commonwealth against their country."

"Sounds mighty dangerous to me Son!" said Jack.

"Not really Pa! see the Russian army is combined of the outdated Musketmen with calvary and cannon, and although large in number there pitiful navy would never manage to get passed our fleets sailing off the Russian coast."

"But whats this got to do with you, I, I dont want you to get hurt, why have you got to get involved."

"Quiet down woman!, dont get so worked up, hes a grown man not a boy," snapped Jack.

"I know, I, I, Im sory," sniffed Betty.

"Its alright Mum, dont worry I know how to look after myself. Now come on lets forget all about this, I dont know when Ill get my next leave."

Two days later Betty and Jack watched with pride as the Queen awarded Mike his new commission. He only had a moment to say goodbye to them before he was taken to meet with the Prime Minister.

Jack and Betty headed for home, on the way Jack told Betty about his new venture. He was setting up his own business to tender for the contracts to build the new railroads, he knew the work would not start until after the elections in three months time. His bank manager had agreed to put up the money to get the business started on condition that a subsidary company be set up along side to run the actual railway or at least part of it.

"Im doing it for our Mike," he said "and his children."

"Theres no chance of that Jack!," said Betty, "he will never marry. He cant let go of Jess's memory, only a miracle like finding her alive will ever see us become grandparents."

"Hmm, perhaps your right" said Jack sadly.

Chrisius,

I'm thoroughly enjoying your tale! Please continue as you find time.

Thanks RowAndLive, and thanks for posting in the other story also :)

Heres some more I hope you like.

PART 7 The Meeting.
"Glad you could make it Mike, come on through," Sir Timothy said greeting Mike.

Mike followed the PM into the large oak pannelled library, through the double doors into the cabinet room. In the room were several people, some of whom he had met before and some new faces.

"Right then everybody, this is our young protige Mike Richards. Some of you I know have met this young man before, but let me briefly tell you about him. Well his family were lucky enough to get out of New England just before the Russians sneak attacked us. His father who you may also know is Jack Richards the construction officer for the London region." the Prime Minister paused then continued, "Mikes parents asked me back then if I could get him into the school I used to be the head of. Of course on realising that the boy was fluent in Russian I accepted. After our election victory Mike applied for a place at the then new Miliatary Accademy at Sandhurst and was accepted. Mike has spent the last six years of his life training in the arts of leadership, combat, tatics and warfare and gentlemen in this time he has travelled to all parts of the commonwealth being stationed at different garrisons. His knowledge of the world and especially Russia is unrivalled and I have here over forty letters of commendation from Mikes commanding officers hes served under during his training."

"Bravo lad," went up the response from all those in attendance.

"Thank you all very much gentlemen." said Mike a little nervously.

"Right then Mike this is as you already know Lord Cartwright the foreign secretary and on his left is Anthony Pritchard MP for Birmingham and my Trade and Industry spokesman," moving around the room shaking peoples hands. "Now I know you know this chap Brigadier Peterson my Miliatary Advisor, with him are General Cooper who saw action in Leeds and seargeant Jones of the Royal Welsh Guards. Lastly but by no means least we have Rear Admiral Simms and Captain Blake two of the navies finest, the Admiral saw action during the war and sunk two enemy ships."

With the introductions over the men took their seats at the huge oak cabinet table.

"Gentlemen shall we proceed, Anthony can you give us your report?" asked Sir Timothy.

"Yes prime minister, now as you know at the present time we have acheived a lead in science and production but the French and Indians are hot on our heals. Russia has the potential to out produce us if she can aqquire the right knowledge, and unfortunately we cannot guarentee that other nations will not trade information with the Russians. The Chinese in particular have formed strong trading relations with Russia since the war, we know they have been shipping incense to them for a couple of years now. We also suspect that Russia is selling saltpeter to the Iroquois but our information on this is sketchy at best." said the Trade and Industry spokesman then sat back down.

"Thanks Anthony, now over to you Lord Cartwright," said the PM.

"Thank you sir," said the Foreign Secretary, "As you may be aware myself and the PM have been conducting secret talks for some months now with the Russians. We have demanded the return of Leeds and all former British territories of New England plus 50 million pounds in compensation for the atrocities committed on our people by their soldiers. However our most recent comunique from Moscow reads as follows, "We are no longer prepared to discuss this matter, further if you persist we will expose your threats to the worlds press. You will remove all naval vessels from our waters or we shall declare war." Of course we have refused to comply with their ridiculous demands and have reissued our demands. Finally to add to our problems we are getting some negative responses, especially from the French and the Chinese regarding the possibility of trading restrictions on the Russians if they were to be requested. The Iroquois will not even answer our questions."

"Now then Mike I can see you are wondering why you are here," said Sir Timothy.

"Yes Sir." responded Mike.

"Well we have a very important mission for you, now if you want to you can leave right now. If you choose to stay you must carry out your orders and you will be sworn to secracy. I have to tell you that this is a very dangerous operation and chances are you wont make it out alive, do you understand me Mike!"

Mike pondered for a moment , at last my chance to kick back at those blasted Russian dogs he thought to himself, "yes Sir! I understand Sir!, I am ready to do my duty and will give my life if necessary Sir!" said Mike with determination.

"Good, good, I knew you wouldnt let me down. Now you must understand you will have no contact with your family until this thing is over, and what you are about to hear is top secret."

"Yes Sir I understand, please continue," said Mike.

"Okay Brigadier can you give us your report?" asked the PM.

""Yes Prime Minister, Presently we have the most advanced toops in the world, and research is ongoing to further improve our forces. We currently have large garrisons in all the former colonies and are well placed to protect our allies if the need should arise. We have good knowledge of the size and make up of other nations land forces with two exceptions. Firstly as we have no diplomatic contact with the Iroquois we have no information on their miliatary status, and they continue to remain isolated from us. The Russians on the other hand still rely upon the outmoded Muskets for their infantry, our intelligence from the resistance movement assures us of this but cannot estimate numbers"

"Bloody thousands of them!! Hundreds of thousands of them from my experience I should say," piped in general Cooper.

"Yes yes general, now please continue Brigadier," said the PM angrily.

"Thank you Sir, we have tentative estimates from the resistance but these cannot be relied upon," stated the Brigadier.

"Excuse me Sir," said Mike "you said the resistance, I wasnt aware of any resistance movement."

"As I said Mike what you are about to hear is top secret, now its your turn General," said the Prime Minister.

"Er yes, sorry for my interuption before Sir, right Mike as youve just heard our info is a bit sketchy. Were not sure what the Iroquois would do if we mounted an invasion to recapture Leeds, nor for that matter the French and the Chinese. Now we dont want to end up fighting a war on several fronts, and the casualties would most likely be appalling for any invasion. So this is where you and Seargeant Jones come in, Jones is the armys best marksman with the new rifles recently issued and can speak a little Russian. Youll have plenty of time to become aqquainted later, now over to you Admiral."

"Thanks Cooper, right gentlemen our control of the seas is total, a few other nations including Russia have got Frigate class ships but our Man O Wars outgun, outmanouvre and out number there fleets a hundred fold. I have just come from the Royal Shipwrights and can tell you that the new flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth MK2 a brand new Ironclad class warship is ready to be launched tonight. A further fifty of these are ready for service at docks around the country with another 200 on the order books. Captain Blake here will comandeer the QE2 and take you two to your first rendezvous," finished the Admiral.

"Okay thank you all very much gentlemen, right then Mike and, sorry Mike I didnt mention, Seargeant Jones's first name is Thomas. You two will need to get kitted up and ready to leave at 21.00 hrs tonight on the QE2. For security reasons I cannot tell you too much at the moment, but for now you will be heading for a small group of islands far out in the northern ocean, there you will rendezvous with a small Russian fishing boat manned by resistance members. They will smuggle you into Leeds where you will be taken to a secret complex in an old gold mine. Once there an operative who is already their will give you your next instructions. You will be both issued with a suicide pill which you are expected to use should you be captured, now do you both understand this!" asked the PM.

"Yes SIR!" said the two men.

"Right then, the best of British luck to you, and may god be with you both!" said the Prime Minister.

Time was of the essence, England had a technological advantage at the moment and the Government did not want to miss this opportunity. Russia would never back down without a fight and England could not afford to risk a war on many fronts, a world war. As science was progressing deadlier weapons were being created, the time to strike was now.

PART 8 Danger At Sea

The QE2, the navy's new flagship was a formiddable beast of a vessel with immense firepower. The ships crew were carrying out many tests whilst enroute to the rendezvous point. Mike and Tom were below in their bunks chatting when BOOM!!

"Oh for pity's sake! how many times have they got to fire those blasted guns" cried Tom.

"I suppose theyve got to practice their range Tom, this is a whole new class of ship never mind the guns," said Mike.

"I guess youre" BOOM!! "Bloody hell! there it goes again hope theyve got some shells left in case we run into Pirates!" expressed Tom.

"Pirates!" said Mike somewhat surprised, "what pirates? Ive never heard of any Pirates."

"Oh theres Pirates alright Mike, just not common knowledge thats all," Tom said.

"So how come you know about them?"

"Well you see my father served aboard HMS Intrepid when she was at sea charting this part of the ocean, four or five years ago." Tom replied, " in fact thats when the islands were heading towards were discovered."

"Well I thought we were supposed to rule the waves, how can there be Pirates in this day and age?"

"As far as controlling the worlds trade routes and having the worlds largest navy we do, but Pirates exist out here. You dont get many British ships venturing out this far from home."

"So what happened to your dad then?"

"Oh hes alright, he was part of the expedition to explore this ocean. There was three ships set off, but only the Intrepid made it back home."

"What happened?" asked Mike.

"Well" said Tom, "they were attacked by the Pirates, my dad said there were at least twenty ships came out of nowhere. They thought they were Russian at first, but they werent flying any national colours, just a black flag with a skull and crossed bones on it. Thay boarded the two Galleons and damaged the Intrepid, but with her superior firepower and speed she managed to fight them off and make it back home. My dad said they managed to sink at least six of the Pirates ships."

"how on earth can so many Pirates survive out here," said Mike.

"I dont know mate, my dad reckons they must live on one of the islands."

"Phew! lets hope we dont run into them eh" said Mike.

"No problem mate, they wouldnt stand a chance against this beast, thats if theyve got any shells left!"

"Lets hope so eh!" said Mike. He remembered the voyage to London all those years ago. He had really enjoyed being at sea on that Galleon with all her sails billowing in the wind. Not so on this voyage, the seas were much rougher and on deck was the stench of smoke continually spewing from the funnels."Im going to try and get some sleep now," said Mike "goodnight Tom."

"Me too, goodnight Mike."

The QE2 was indeed a beast of a ship, she was a broadside warrior class built of four and half inch iron plates and bulkheads with a displacement of 9200 tons. She was capable of cruising in all weathers at a steady 14 knotts, and was armed with 26 no 68 pounder smooth bore mussel loading guns, 16 no 7 inch breach loading and 6 no 70 pounder breach loading guns with a crew compliment of 700 men.

They were woken early the next morning by the ships whistle sounding and the lookout shouting ship ahoy.

"Ah good your both awake, best get your gear together lads were at the rendezvous and weve sighted the fishing vessel," said Captain Blake.

"Yes Sir" said Tom and Mike both saluting. They both washed and packed their gear and had time for a bit of breakfast in the galley before boarding the Russian ship.

"My god," said Mike, "look at that, its the Queen Of The Sea." She was hardly recognisable having been renovated and converted into a fishing vessel, but she still had her name on her bow. Mikes heart skipped a beat or two as the memories flooded back.

"Well goodbye men and good luck, all Englands hopes rest on you two!" said the Captain.

A young Russian sailor, Unscratchedfoot or scratch as he known to his shipmates showed Mike and Tom below to their quarters."In here said Scratch, "youre bunking with me and Yuri."

"Thanks" said Tom, "your English is very good."

"We all are fluent in how you say, your lingo," said Yuri, and spoke to Scratch in Russian. Scratch left and went back on deck.

"Im fluent in Russian" said Mike, "so you can speak in your language if you prefer."

"Its no problem, we speak the English. Right you two must do as I say you understand, when we get close to Leeds there may be patrols who might want to search us. This will not be for at least 7 or 8 days so for now you can both relax."

"Thanks Yuri" said Mike.

A few days later Mike was taking a stroll on deck when he spotted scratch, smashing fish on the head with a large wooden mallet.

"For gods sake there dead already, just stop that will you" yelled Yuri.

"If I must," replied Scratch, and walked off with his shoulders shrugged.

"Sorry about that Mike, hes a bit strange sometimes but he tells really funny jokes!"

"Its alright Yuri, Ive met like him when I was at Sandhurst, I can tell you," said Mike.

That evening from out of nowhere two Pirates ships appeared, the first fired its cannons, but luckily they fell short. Yuri wrestled with the wheel and frantically shouted orders to his men.

"Head for that fog bank to the south," shouted Tom to Yuri. "We should be able to lose them in their."

They had a slight speed advantage over the Pirates, but the second ship let rip its salvo, and several shots hit their mark, sending deadly shards of wood flying in all directions. Several crew were killed outright and a few badly injured.

"Quick Mike!! break out those rifles weve got for the resistance," yelled Tom.

Tom lined up his shot and sent a bullet straight into the Pirate ships captains forehead, and he fell to the deck like a sack of potatoes. The Russians swiftly got the hang of these strange new weapons and inflicted heavy casualties on the dumbfounded Pirates. The Pirates couldnt even get to reload theor cannons cause every time one of them raised their head Tom's accuracy sent them to their grave. The two Pirate ships peeled away realizing they'd bitten off more than they could chew, but Yuri still headed into the fog bank just in case they decided to try again.

"These rifles are amazing," yelled Scratch jumping for joy, "I shot one of those pigs in his left eye, and well he screamed and staggered about with blood spurting through his fingers, I put another into his right eye before he fell over the side, HA HA HA!!"

"Youre a bloody good shot, Ill give you that much" said Tom.

That night there was an awful storm, the ship was being thrown around by twenty foot waves and was taking on water from the damage caused ealier.

"She cant take much more of this," cried Yuri as six men struggled to keep her on course.

"Dont give up, well make it. She will get us through the good old Queen Of The Sea," yelled Mike over the noise of the storm. The storm blew out by morning and Yuri and his crew set about repairing the damage.

Over the next few days things were easier and Mike became good friends with Scratch. Mike liked his sense of humour, it reminded him of his mates back at the academy. Scratch told Mike that some of the women and children left alive after the war in Leeds had been spared by the Russian soldiers. This filled Mike with new hope, maybe Jess was still alive, maybe hed find her one day.

Land was sighted and Tom and Mike were rowed ashore by Scratch under cover of darkness. So far they had not been spotted by any Russian patrols, but things were bound to get more dangerous from here on in. Scratch gave them directions to the mine and bid them farewell.

"I promise you Scratch, when this is over Ill look you up" said Mike.

Oh, Chrisius? Posting your award winning story here? Are you deserting us at Apolyton? Betrayer! (But the only reason I am at Apolyton is for the story forum, so...) Lets see another award winning story come our way soon, and I promise to finish requium for you before the new year.

And did any of that make sence to you? Perhaps Chrisius knows what I mean... perhaps I will post Ghosts of Thermopolie here as well (or perhaps somthing a bit lighter to break the ice)... perhaps... Yuki's Tale?

Thanks Z and Ancient Grudge heres some more to wet your appetites. :)

PART 9 Behind Enemy Lines,
Its been over a fortnight Jack, since we heard from Mike. Im really worried," said Betty.

"Stop fussing woman, Mike can take care of himself."

"I know, I know, but surely he should of written to us by now. Im going to go see our Tim and find out whats going on if we dont hear from him by this weekend!" said Betty, "Lord only knows where he is."

"You cant go doing that Betty love, hes the Prime Minister and has got far more important things to be doing."

Betty had never really liked the idea of Mike being in the army, she couldnt bear the thought of him getting hurt. Little did she know that as she spoke Mike was scrambling halfway up a cliff path in enemy territory in the pitch black of night.

"This way Tom," whispered Mike as they headed towards the the old disused mine. "I reckon this is the place Tom, Scratch said we should throw three pebbles into the entrance, and wait for a light to be flashed three times."

"Okay Mike," said Tom.

After they received the signal they headed into the entrance of the mine, where they were met by an old Russian soldier. "Hello my name is Vovan, you will follow me yes," and he led them through the maze of tunnels to the secret complex deep inside the hills.

Mike and Tom were both disorientated when they got there and a tall fellow approached them and said, "two for tea."

"Yes with milk and sugar," said Mike remembering the codewords the PM had given him. "So your our contact," continued Mike.

"Yes Sir, agent Simon Adams at your service, hope you had a safe journey. Pleased to meet you, I was beginning to wonder if you would get here."

Mike and Tom explained the events that had taken place at sea over a hearty meal and a pot of tea. Vovan headed back through the mine to keep watch at the entrance.

"I expect your wondering what it is your here for," said Simon.

"Your not wrong," said Tom, "where do you want these rifles?"

"Just leave them on that table mate."

"So what is our mission then?" asked Mike.

"Right well,Ill fill you in on the whole situation. In eight days from now the Russian leader is going to take the salute of the armed forces in a parade through Moscow. Tensions in Russia are at all time high and the opposistion party is gaining momentum. The outside world does not suspect it, but Russia is at breaking point, the resistance formed by some of the miliatary and the Russian peasants are tired of the tyranny. They are highly active and have been since the war. Of course the authorities suspect our involvement in secretly backing up this organisation, hence Russias aggresive diplomatic stance with us."

"Well never mind the politics, just get to the point will you," said Tom inpatiently.

"So what is our mission," asked Mike.

"Your mission is to dress as peasants and make your way to the Capitol Moscow, this is where your fluency in Russian will come in Mike. You need to get in at least 24 hrs before the parade otherwise youll never get through security. Approx half a mile from where Catherine will take the salute is Moscow's cathedral, and from the top of the clock tower is a clear line of sight to the podium. Tom your task is to assasinate the leader of Russia."

"Bloody hell!" exclaimed Tom looking to Mike who stood there with his mouth open.

"When you get to the cathedral you will find a rifle with double sights fitted hidden in the clock tower. you will only get one shot at this, which once youve taken you will have some time. As the Russian Miliatary does not yet have knowledge of our new rifles they wont immediatley suspect that the shot had come from the cathedral, but their search will soon fan out. Your only chance of escape is to seek refuge in the sewer system, heres a plan of the sewers read it, and memorise it you cant take it with you."

"Right," Mike said. "What is hoped to be achieved by this."

"Yeah, I mean there will be thousands of troops looking for us, and there bound to search the sewers sooner or later," added Tom.

"Right well you are correct of course, but if things go the way they are expected to go you wont be executed as spies you will be treated as heroes."

"What on earth arte you talking about Man!?" asked Mike.

"In about six days from now a massive English occupation force will arrive off the coast Leeds>"

"What? so why send us to risk our lives," said Tom interupting Simon.

"Let me explain, its expected that when the news breaks Russia will sink into civil war. At least seven cities including Leeds have a large resistance presence and are expected to be taken quite easily. In addition Leeds still has a number of English citizens who along with the resistance will declare alleigance to England. After the garrison of Leeds has surrendered the troops will occupy Leeds. We expect a leader of the opposistion to take control of Russia, and in secret negotiations he has agreed to hand back all former British territories. The reason for this large force is in case anything goes wrong and Leeds has to be defended due to a counter attack."

"For gods sake its risky," said Tom.

"Too right, but its payback time," said Mike.

"Yes its risky indeed, not least for you two, but theres a chance this can be pulled off without the world thinking that we have invaded. Hopefully this will prevent any further hostilities elsewhere. You had better get some sleep now, there is much to do before you leave in the morning."

Mike and Tom now had a perilous journey ahead of them, just covering the four hundred miles to Moscow in a week would be difficult, with checkpoints everywhere and patrols wandering all over the countryside at all times. Catherine The Great trusted no one, least of all the Russian people.

PART10 Fatal Danger / Fallen Comrades.
Early next morning Mike and Tom were studying maps and planning their route to Moscow when Simon joined them.

"Morning chaps, would you like some breakfast. Ive got some fresh eggs from Vovan."

"Sure that would be great," said Tom.

"Me too," said Mike.

"Right lads Vovans got you two Russian Calvary uniforms and two fresh horses. Ive marked on this map several isolated farms where you will be able to shelter at night, and Ive got false papers for you both. This is an official Russian dispatch bag and inside are some false reports sealed. If you get stopped you should tell them that you are carrying urgent papers to Moscow from the miliatary govenor of Leeds. you should travel by day as you will arouse more suspicion if seen riding at night," Simon told Mike and Tom whilst they ate breakfast.

"Sorry Simon, but weve been discussing this and weve decided to travel on foot at night. I know this country very well, and as a boy I went to Moscow with my dad many times, and in the summertime we often went hiking in the hills and forests of Russia and New England."

"Thats crazy! youll never cover that distance in time."

"No problem mate! both Mike and I have done far more than this distance during survival training, and we will be able to slip past any Russian guards in the dark."

"When I was on tour in Rome my unit covered one thousand miles in a week, through the vast expanse of the central deserts of Rome. We travelled at night running for thirty minutes then walking thirty minutes. By day we sheltered in our tents, this is the same but we will hide in the forests during daylight hours," said Mike.

"Well it sounds like youve made up your minds on this, no point in argueing about it." uttered Simon, "Now Ive got you both a revolver. These are a brilliant piece of equipment, they use bullets similar to rifle rounds, only smaller. This revolving barrel takes six rounds, they are so new the army has not been issued with them yet. At least they hadnt a month ago when I left London."

"Not when we left a couple of weeks ago either. Thanks they will be very useful," said Tom.

"Well thats me done, Ive got to leave you now and head back to London for a meeting with the PM. Good luck and I hope to see you when all this over." Simon said and left Mike and Tom to continue their preparations.

Mike and Tom were both very fit young men and well trained professional soldiers. The first few days of their journey went well with one exception. On the third night they were spotted by a Russian patrol. The four Musketmen saw Mike and Tom sneak into the barns, they were trying to steal a couple of Chickens for there supper when the guards called out to them. Mike and Tom split up and hid inside the farm buildings stealthfully taking out the Russians one at a time and cutting their throats open with their sharp sheath knifes.
They lost valuable time hiding the bodies, and it was only a matter of time before the soldiers were noticed missing or found dead.

On the sixth day they were holed up halfway up a moutain in a small cave, where Mike had stayed with his father many years before. From their vantage point they could see right accross the central plains of Russia to the capitol Moscow some sixty miles away.

"were going to have to do that in one," said Mike, " theres no forests to hide out in by day."

"Your right Mike, do you think we should we should rest up here tonight, and set off tomorrow afternoon. Give us chance to rest our feet and by the time we are down to flatground it will be going dark."

"Sorry Tom, well have to go tonight mate, dont forget Simon said we needed to get to Moscow at least 24 hours before the parade. Also reckon they must have found those bodies by now, thier sure to be following our trail sooner or later."

"Yeah youre right, but I think we should steal some horses to speed things a bit ."

"Well Tom I dont think we will have to, see that farm over there about ten miles away. Thats one of the farms Simon marked on that map. I think we should head there first and see if they can give us some horses. Youre right about setting off early though, we can make it there before it gets dark. Just have to be more careful thats all," said Mike.

"Okay Mike thats agreed, Im going to get some sleep now will you take the first watch," said Tom.

"Sure mate no problem."

That evening when they reached the farm house there was a light on in the kitchen, and it sounded like the family were having their evening meal. Mike made his way up to the front of the property while Tom took out his pistol and gave him cover.

"Hello! Hello! weve come from Leeds to see you!" called Mike.

For a few moments there was silence, Toms figer tightened on the trigger. "Hello! Hello! we have food and fresh horses for you," came a familiar voice from inside the house. The door opened, "Hello Mike wheres Tom?", it was Scratch.

"What the hell are you doing here?" asked Mike.

"This is my parents farm, I had no idea you were coming here until I arrived home two days ago. Ive guessed that you are heading to Moscow, but for what reason I do not know,"

"Scratch you old dog you," said Tom breaking from his cover.

"Quick you two come inside, the army patrols past here regulary about every hour." Scratch introduced them to his family who gave them food and drink. "Id like to come with you, Ive got three fresh horses saddled up in the barn waiting for us to leave."

Mike looked to Tom who nodded approvingly, "Okay Scratch your in. But I cant tell you where were going or why yet, though you will soon find out. I reckon you probably know the country around here better then me any how, glad to have you on board mate."

"Yeah likewise Scratch," added Tom.

Scratch made his farewells and the three of them set off at a fast gallop accross the arid countryside. Scratch did indeed know his way around as well as knowing the location of all local checkpoints and army patrol routes. They made excellent time and avoided any enemy contact.

As they approached the outskirts of Moscow, Scratch went to speak to a farmer who agreed to look after the horses. Mike was beginning to wonder why everyone seemed to be helping them, "Scratch are all the farmers against the Russian leadership, why does everyone seem to help us,"

"Mike you dont know the half of it. Only about nine months ago the soldiers shot dead my younger brother in front of my parents, because they did not have enough money to pay for their protection!" Sratch said.

"Oh my word! Scratch I am sorry, the Russian army treat their own people as badly as their enemies then?" Mike said.

"Its a long story Mike but for now we should get moving, it will be daylight in a few hours. You will have to tell me where we are headed for Mike! so I can decide which way to go."

"Yes mate youre right, we need to get into the centre of Moscow and take refuge at the cathedral. Ill tell you the rest when we get there."

"How far would you say it is?" asked Tom.

"About six miles to the city centre!" replied Scratch.

The three men set off, comrades with a joint goal although Scratch did not what his goal was. Mike did not tell Scratch the mission in case they were captured and interrogated, he somehow hoped that not knowing would protect him in that event.

"Sir the English agents have been spotted approaching the cathedral!" a young Russian soldier said.

"Good! very good now we can sit and wait till they have done the deed." said his commander Vovan.

Vovan the old soldier was lying in wait for Mike and Tom, he had three men with him and was a high ranking officer in the Russian army with a taste for power of his own. There were many factions in Russia's armed forces who if given the chance would try sieze power for themselves. Vovan had taken Simon prisoner before he could leave Leeds and subjected him to terrible torture to extract his information, needless to say Simon never made it to his meeting with Sir Timothy.

Mike, Tom and Scratch were woken by the clocks bells at dawn on the day of the parade, they had managed to slip easily into Moscow the other night.

"I cant help feeling somethings wrong!" said Scratch.

"Its okay mate were in, so far so good thanks to you," said Tom.

"No you dont understand, we have'nt seen any patrols in the streets outside since we got here yesterday. And dont you think it was a little to easy geting here in the first place."

"Look Scratch keep it shut! weve got a job to do and now were here were going to do it." said Mike with authority.

"Okay Ill be quiet."

Vovan had planned to have one of his men take the shot if the English agents had not made it, but this was perfect for him. Not only would the Czarina be out of the way but he would be the one who captured the assassins. All the more to aid his claim to power!

The time had approached, " right Scratch you may have guessed by now but our mission is to assassinate Catherine when she takes the salute today. Tom is going to use this long range double sighted rifle to shoot her when she steps up on to the podium over there."

"No chance! and how do you plan on getting out of here," said Scratch.

"You just wait and see mate," said Tom.

"We were briefed to make it down into the sewers and lie low until things settle down," Mike continued to explain all the things that Simon had said to them back at the mines at Leeds.

"My god! you English dont do things by halves do you! an invasion force off the coast of Leeds you say. Well I only hope things go to plan, but if you want my advice dont go to the sewers. I know for a fact they are patrolled regulary."

"But simon was absolutley clear about it, he said our only chance was to hideout there." said Tom.

"Simon is not here taking the risks! trust me Mike his information must have been wrong. There are many dark forces at work in Russia." warned Scratch.

"Okay Scratch after the shot we'll follow you, after all you got us in okay!" said Mike.

Tom got into posistion and checked his sights, "I need you to stay quiet now while I concentrate." He said to the others, his target was in his line and he tensed the trigger and fired DAMN!! the ***** moved. The party on the podium were in a state of panic and the Czarinas bodyguards tried to get to her when her forehead erupted with the impact of the second bullet, as she fell backwards into the arms of an old Russian general.

"That was amazing Tom! how did you manage to react so fast," said Mike.

"I told you it would be no problem!" replied Tom.

"Quickly follow me! this way!" shouted Scratch.

As they made it down stairs into the hall of the cathedral the south doors were suddenly kicked open and bullets began flying in all directions, "Take cover!" shouted Mike and threw the rifle to Scratch. Tom instintively did a forward roll and found some cover then in the confusion put a bullet between the eyes of the first Russian. "Good shooting!" shouted Mike.

The odds were now even, Vovan had not expected their to be three to contend with as Scratch hit another in the chest who collapsed onto the pugh's in front of him. Realising things were not going his way he shouted out to Mike, "Mike! dont shoot it is I Vovan form Leeds, you remember. Put down your weapons and I will protect you."

"Never you dog! what have you done with Simon?"

"Simon has gone to hell! where you will soon join him!" he shouted back and fired at Scratch, hitting him in his right leg.

"You b****rd!" shouted Tom as he broke from cover and emptied his pistol into Vovans body. Vovan collapsed on to the floor in a pool of his own blood when the last Russian fired and hit Tom in the stomach. Mike broke from cover and shot the Russian between the Eyes and he fell to the floor.

Scratch who was injured himself picked Tom up and told Mike to help him, "Come on theres a secret passage in the crypt! it goes under the square and comes up into the local resistance HQ underneath a cafe."

Tom was in a bad way and bleeding heavily, "No youll never get out with me, Mike leave me your gun Ill try to hold them off for as long as possible," said Tom.

"Never! Im not leaveing you here Tom!" said Mike.

"Youve got no choice, now do what Ive told you. Give me your gun and get out of here, Now!!"

They could here soldiers approaching, "Okay my friend, Ill never forget you," said Mike.

"GO NOW!" Tom shouted.

As Mike and Scratch made it into the tunnel they heard gunfire behind them , several shots were fired then silence. Tom had paid the ultimate price, he had sacrificed his own life for his comrades.

This was the the story of Mike Richards the son of a Stonemason from Leeds. Whose life was thrown into chaos by the actions of an evil regime that had now claimed the life of his best friend Tom.
