I'm fairly new to the forum, so forgive me if this has been suggested already...

When I'm at war (particularly late in the game), I like to place my ships in strategic spots at sea. However, putting the ship in one spot on a vast ocean doesn't buy you very much. Conversely, setting the ship to "explore" is obviously worthless for such a function.

Therefore, it would be really great if you could designate a path for a ship to "patrol". It would be exactly the same as a "go to" command, except that the ship would simply move back and forth from one end of the path to the other until issued a stop command. If it spotted an enemy ship (or any ship for that matter) it would also stop. Then again, maybe there is a way to do this and I'm too inexperienced to have discovered it yet. I know you could sort of accomplish this with the shift-go to command, but it will only stop if an enemy shows up in an adjacent tile (not anywhere within the ship's sight). Also, I'd like it stop for all ships so that I can see who's travelling where.

A somewhat related function would be to park a ship (frigate or better) outside an enemy city port and select a "blockade" command which would shut down all sea trade routes into the city. It should also reduce the food and commerce production in adjacent tiles to nothing. This would really enhance the effectiveness of a powerful navy.

If you surround an enemy coastal city with ships, then that city will no longer be giving its resources to other cities. (if it was only trading to them across the water) but yeah, I agree with your ideas.
