Military Unit Cost

The more units you have, the more they cost to maintain/upkeep.
Also certain civics will modify that cost,
Religion - Pacifism: +1 :gold: Support cost per military unit.
Legal - Vassalage: +X Free units (that don't require support costs)

X: Dependant on map size.

What is meaning of Military Unit Cost in the Financial Advisor Menu?

:)

You pay money for the upkeep of your troops. This upkeep is mentioned in the unit cost section of the financial advisor.

-You pay for every unit above the free support for units
-You pay for every military unit (every unit except settlers, workers and missionaries) when you've using the pacifism civic and you're above the free support for military units
-You pay for every unit that is outside your cultural borders above the first 5.

The details about unit maintenance can be found in this article:
Unit maintenance explained.

Oh, by the way, the free unit support is not dependant on the map size. It's directly related to the sum of the sizes of your cities. If you have a big empire with many large cities, then you have a large free unit support.

map size does not have an effect on upkeep at all.
vassalage gives you +5 free units and +10% of your population size.
i.e. if you have a summary population of 30, vassalage will give you +8 free units.

basically (vithout vassalage), there are
  • 4 + 24% of pop. size free units
  • 2 + 12% of pop. size free military units
  • some free units depending on difficulty level (settler - 24, chieftain - 18, warlord - 12, noble - 8, prince - 6, monarch - 4, emperor - 3, immortal - 2, deity - 1)
  • unit's cost is 1 or 2 gold (depends on if you running pacifism) * handicap discount (0.2 for settler, 0.9 on immortal, 1 on deity - you can see this in CivIVHandicapInfo.xls)

that is what 'unit cost' means.

Wow, this is actually really helpful. I've known the form of how this worked for a long time, but never the precise mechanics of it. Thanks ;)
