Minor Gauntlet Six

I thought we's take a break from Sid
Sorry but I'm hooked at the moment so that won't include me. I've got a week's holiday coming up so I may be able to put in an entry for this Diplo game as well but I must carry on with the Sid game. I'm sure that for some people in this forum, Minor 5 would be a walk in the park but for me it's a real challenge and I'm not giving in yet!

 You're asking us a question?

I'm returning home from a vacation, so I won't have access to what I need to answer your question for a few more hours.

After giving the Sid Gauntlet a pass, I decided to give this one a try with Russia. The world was 60%, pangaea, sedentary barbs with aggression on the lowest setting. (The idea was to avoid wars and speed things up. It didn't totaly suceed in the former and at 7 hours 41 minutes I am not sure about the latter.) Opponents were Greece, Byzantines, Ottoman, and Korea. Nothing terribly new or exciting to report. I have posted a 740AD victory with 5325 points. This was a whole turn earlier than ignas' #1 entry.

I shall try this again, to see if I can do better. :)

That's a good opening bid, Denniz.:goodjob:

Funny enough I have also just finished a Regent Diplo, but on a Tiny map. I have lost some of my #1 rankings (Tiny and Domination) recently and thought that a quick Tiny research game would be in order. I've always been a fan of the Russians but their advantage is reduced on the smaller maps with less huts to pop, so I decided to follow Mistfit's recent attempt at Diplo and try the Sumerians out. I was impressed with the combination of traits and now I'm not so sure what to try!

So far as I can tell, no. III checks for the victory conditions in a certain order, and Conquest is apparently first.

:gripe: Hideous RND results. 5 scientific civs, we all get Medicine.
It happened to me once too (I think in a Gauntlet too, the Huge Diplo/SS one, can't remember), where we all got Medicine. Must be a bug.

I have posted a save and the date is...740AD.:)

You are still winning on many counts, Denniz. You posted your save first, your playing time was quicker and your score was just under 300 points higher.

I played the Sumerians against Korea, Byzantines, Persia, Germany and Ottomans. It was a fantastic start-a builders paradise. Only one cow but many bgs and surrounded by hills. I was pulling 30spt from the capital when it was a city in the MA.

RNG luck was reasonable with free techs except that everyone except the Ottomans got Mono as their freebie. I just managed to get Fued from them but they gave back less gpt in the return trade and the loss in gpt (plus some poor build choices) crippled my early MA research. Several times my unit costs with settlers out in the fields meant I had to drop resarch to 10%! By 10AD I still had to get Physics, Metallurgy, Magnetism and ToG to enter the IA. It was four turn research all the way beyond there and I thought that I would beat the date by one turn, but my palace prebuild for the UN was only 900 shields and so I had to play another turn after entering MT.

Oh, I finally got an SGL for my penultimate research project. I didn't use him as the game was all but won and the prebuild gave the UN vote at the same time as a rushed construction.

I'll be back!

UN_built_510_AD.jpg

An SGL for the Pyramids pretty early was huge. The others received Mono and Engineering but not Feudalism in the MA (I got Theology), Nationalism and Steam in IA (I got medicine), but everything in the Modern Age.

I got 2 more SGLS, one was used for ToA since I had happiness problems (stupid in hindsight, should have used it on Copes since the ToA was quickly gone) and other for the UN.

Building Copes with the SGL would have saved a couple of turns, a lack of workers and sloppy play would have saved a few, and having to research Feudalism was a waste of 4 turns.

Golden Age was started as soon as I reached the Middle ages by attacking an Ottoman spear with an elite EW. Later on my 4 horsemen took down two riflemen in an Otto town when I needed to get to 800 beakers per for Combustion and Refining. I was amazed.

Most of the game I was trading techs for 9 gold, 20 gold, etc. to keep a 4 turn rate and out of bankruptcy.

I thought that this game was in my sights. A great start, Pyramids SGL. Only one luxin my lands-who cares at this level. No matter that my free tech for the MA was Chivalry; this game was heading for a good date. Four-turn research from banking onwards gave me a target of 490AD if I took a chance on one of us getting Fission as a final free tech. Killercane's post made my mind up-all or nothing. I made sure that my palace prebuild was the full 1000 shields this time and it was on target to reach the election date. One out of six civs to get Fission? No chance! I end up moving my palace as 490AD dawns.

I might carry this on as a SS game as although a lack of hospitals will hamper my MT research, I will still easily beat my number 1 slot for Small Regent SS. I did manage to get all the other first tier techs and Miniturisation so all is not lost.

As I said before, I'll be back!:D

It is a shame you missed a great date like that. Did you try turning off research and offering a massive gpt deal? I have also gone back to the other civs and gotten all their techs. The extra techs sometimes sweaten the deal.

I've got one going where I am up to 875BC. I have 21 cities and 54 pop. I popped a hut for a settler in 3950BC and I just got a SGL in 1000BC for pryamids. I am researching education. I just have to kick the research engine into high gear.

Had a game that could have been great but drew Chivalry and Communism as Freebies, and none of the AI got Engineering or Medicine. Sigh.

On another note, I hadnt intended to pick up Civ 4 early, but reading through the new posts in that forum has upped my interest. Heres a pic with an indicator on scoring http://www.civfanatics.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=750&original=1.
Seems the system isnt that different, aside from giving technology and wonder points. It will be interesting to see the mechanics of it.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I did get their techs via the Big Picture before getting my free tech. They got Ecology, Rocketry and Computers when I gifted them into MT. I then traded for all three during the inter-turn and selected Fission as my new research project, knowing that if Fission was my free tech I would get back into the Big Picture and convert my prebuild. I got miniturisation and so my prebuild was built unconverted!

Stupidly I didn't convert the prebuild to SETI :wallbash: so I have now ended up moving my palace to where my FP was. I have no oil or rubber as neither mattered to me (so I thought) and I've lost my FP. Still at least Nationalism is still not in play so I can hopefully turn over a couple of AIs with my few knights (no M-Trad either!) and reduce the tech costs for my final research projects. I've just slept on it and I'll now enter Modern Times as No More Mr Nice Guy. Hopefully the AI will not know what's hit them.

Then I'll come back to this challenge.

If you'll allow me to digress for a moment, I carried on that game and launched my SS in 830AD. That beat my current record by 300 years! :) It's an ill wind that blows no good.

On topic(sort of) : I can't believe the AI tries to build so many wonders. In the last attempt, at one point the Germans had seven cities and were building wonders in three of them! Also in these fast research games, they end up building them only to gain culture and possibly head towards a GA at the end of it. I established embassies in 330BC whilst at the end of the MA and their capitals were all building wonders. Two were building the Oracle, one the GLib, one the Colossus and the other ToA. All but the Colossus were obsolete as I had already gifted them Education.

@1125BC, 18 cities, 58 pop, researching Theology, got SGL with wheel for Pryamids, got a 2nd SGL hanging around. I think it best to save him for Copes.

I was inspired to switch to Sumeria with 5 sci civ opponents. (Greece, Bzyantine, Korea, Otto, and Babs) Even then I was only able to get 2 of the 3 1st tier MA techs from them.

On the downside, I have only one lux connected and no iron. Two more lux settled near but all three are really far from start. Research is nowhere near 4 turns. I have as many scientists as I can get/afford.

I was lucky enough to get two early SGLs in the game I'm playing at the moment. I decided to use the second one to rush the FP as soon as it became available. (I had a prebuild set up but an early FP is very important IMO.)

Sounds like our games are at the around the same stage, as I entered the MA in 1125BC. My luck with SGLs was balanced by a lack of luck with AI research (I had to research MM for heaven's sake!!!) and poor free techs. I'm hoping for a good draw on the IA freebies as I'm already one turn behind my last attempt and with four turn research all the way I can't afford to drop another turn. I'm relying on Steam, Medi plus either Industry or Electricity to stay in with a chance of beating Killercane's target.

My AA was similar. I must have popped barbs more than half-a-dozen times. I think I only got 2-3 techs. Also, I think you are ahead of me as I'm not sure I have 4-turn research worked out yet. Of course, I now have a major distraction, so I don't know when I will finish. Depends on whether I have trouble with my ATI card.
