Hey everyone,

To Install ModBuddy on Ubuntu, you must install VSIsoShell.exe. When you try to run the program, it will hang when trying to install $shtdwn$.req. This file shouldn't be used on Linux Machines. To install VSIsoShell.exe:

  1. Go to your Terminal
  2. Navigate to the location where you downloaded the VSIsoShell.exe program.
  3. Run this in your Terminal Prompt:
Code:
_SFX_CAB_SHUTDOWN_REQUEST=1 wine VSIsoShell.exe

This will get the installer running... that's as far as I've gotten so far. Will update later when I get the installer to work!

Note that to run the mod tools it needs to connect to the Civ5 engine and assets. Without civ5 on the machine you won't get the mod tools working.

@Croxis: Checked the WineHQ AppDB, but no luck. I don't think it's a very common program that's needed. I was hoping someone had figured out how to get it working. AlanH was able to get it working, but that's through a Mac Virtual Machine. I don't think there is a Wine for Mac though. I tried setting it to several different Windows in Wine, but that didn't help much either.

@Dale: I have Civ5 running almost perfectly with Wine right now. I'm very familiar with getting Windoze based programs to run through Ubuntu, but no luck with this program.

Really want to get this running, so we can get started on the Civ5 version of BUG damn it!

Edit: Got the first issue fix, but it won't install yet. Gotta do some more research, or maybe wait for a Wine Patch.

Hello,
I know it's been quite a few years since this thread was started, but did anyone succeed in getting ModBuddy working on Linux?

In September I switched to Linux Cinnamon Mint 22 from Windows 10.

A couple months later I managed to get Civ 5 successfully running with my Linux install.

A week or two ago I managed to get it to also properly run with mods.

Now, I'm trying to build mods again via ModBuddy, but I got a message saying "The Visual Studio 2010 Isolated Shell Redistributable is required to run this application. Would you like to download and install it now?" I tried doing that, but it didn't work. However, I discovered I had backed up a copy of Visual Studio 2010.

I'm still learning Linux, but I then tried to install vsisoshell.exe. I don't understand the errors I got though. It seemed like it was running the program, and then . . . decided to stop.

sudo apt install vsisoshell.exe
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package vsisoshell.exe
E: Couldn't find any package by glob 'vsisoshell.exe'

So, did anyone successfully get ModBuddy running on Linux?
