Mods not working at all (help!)

You can do this with any of the mods, but I'll use mine as an example.

First, go into the Civ 6 game directory (the actual one, most likely in the steamapps folder)

In the Base/Assets/UI/Screens/ directory, replace the ReportScreen.xml and ReportScreen.lua files with the files from the Unit Report Screen mod.

In the Base/Assets/UI/Popups/ directory, replace the UnitPromotionPopup.lua file with the same file from the Unit Report Screen mod.

Be sure to make backups of the originals (or just verify cache through steam after testing to set them back to normal)

If all goes well, the Report Screen button should work and show the modded info.

If this works, then there is an issue with your MODS folder and it most likely is an issue with the username.

CONGRATULATIONS!

It worked!
So it means that Firaxis messed-up AGAIN with non american customers (Grrrr), as they did with Civilization 5.
To be clear, if you have special character in your Windows User FOLDER (like "é" or "à" etc.), mods won't work.
I don't know if anyone here has contact with the dev team at Firaxis to let them know (and kick some asses ;) )

Thanks again!

My 2 cents : my Windows username has a "é"

Had the same issue. In fact had a loooot of terrible issues from that one stupid issue. Worst perhaps not being able to install MSI packages, hence no .NET or C++, hence no Windows Updates, hence lots of crap not working right and serious exposure to security vulnerabilities. But formatting was out of the question until i exhausted all other options. How Microsoft didn't fix this yet (i had Windows 7) is beyond belief.

But after a lot of endless troubleshooting i did manage to pinpoint the problem to a faulty \appdata\ folder and finally solve this. This is how to do it in Windows 7, hope things haven't changed too much and you can find a way to achieve the same in Win10:

Check if you have the correct permissions for your Documents folder

> Go to C:\Users\Daedraug\
> right-click and select Properties
> select Security tab
> on the top list of Groups and User Names click SYSTEM
> on the bottom list check what permissions the System has for that folder
> adding new permissions on Windows 7 was an hassle with a lot of clicking and redundant windows, but the whole thing has probably changed on Win10. Hard for me to guide you through it, but google is your friend.

If permissions seem fine, try:
> Go to C:\Users\ and check if you have duplicate folders with weird characters like Daédraug
> Go to My Computer
> right-click and select Properties
> click Advanced System Settings on the top left panel
> select Advanced tab
> click Environment Variables button at the bottom
> on the top list (User Variables) click New
> on Variable Name paste USERPROFILE
> on Variable Value paste the path to your default user folder C:\Users\Daedraug\
> create duplicate entries for any duplicate folders you found on C:\Users\

Disclaimer: Not an expert, just very familiar with the problem you describe. And messing with folder permissions and environment variables might cause a lot of system instability. Create a restore point before making any of these changes. And if the problem persists revert everything manually or restore to be safe.

Glad you figured out your problem. I thought that your Folder might be the issue, being that you tried all the things prior to that. enjoy your mods.

It seems it is different on Windows 10, but thank you for your help.

I found an updated tutorial for Windows 10 if anyone wants to try :

(it is in the comments of the article, NOT in the article)

Er... changing user folder name, by whatever means, regedit or otherwise, is a horrible idea. You're better off re-installing Windows.

From the comments section of that very article:
DO NOT even TRY to do this in Windows 10. You CAN NOT change your user profile folder's name just by renaming some registry key. This doesn't work that way. You will end up in real shitstorm with temporary profile and tears in your eyes.

I re-installed Windows ... IT WORKS PERFECTLY NOW !

So, to conclude, it means that Firaxis messed-up AGAIN with Windows user folder: if you have "special" characters (like "é" or "à" etc.) in your Windows user folder, mods won't work.

Firaxis made same kind of mistake with the release of Civilization 5 (game could not launch).
It would be time they understand English is not the only spoken language in the world ... especially as they're creating a game called ... Civilization.

Thanks again everyone!

You know you can avoid this if you just install mods into the DLC folder, right?

I admire your dedication, even reinstalling windows. wow.
But I guess that works too.

I probably have the same problem.
Have you not managed to run any mod before the fix? I saw that you were talking about UI mods, which I can't run too.
I really don't want to format my system for this... is it possible to install mods in the DLC folder?

UI mods are the one you can see immediatly if they work (they don't).
I tried other mods, some of them (map mods) made my game crash, others (IA ...) seems to be working, but no way to check if they actually worked.
It seems none actually worked.

Yes, buy for example, I use "Smoother Difficulty" mod, which remove AI's extra settler, and I can confirm that it works.
On the other hand, I can't use "Better Trade Screen" mod, and I suspect that it is because of non-English characters in the folder name.
I thought you might have an answer for it... maybe I'll format my system eventually :\

As someone mentioned here : you can avoid this if you just install mods into the DLC folder.

Do all mods work in this method?

In short no. Since the tools have not yet been released, modding Civ6 currently is very basic. Most mods will go into your mods folder in Your Documents folder, others into your game 'base' folder. In some cases both are needed. It depends on the function of the mod.

I haven't used any mods that I didn't write myself yet, but they all work fine from the DLC folder. Aztec DLC folder has a .modinfo file with same structure as normal mods so I strongly believe that we can assume that these folders have the same functionality, even if their intended purpose might be different.
