hello,

i have been playing this game for a while. I'm quite an old player and started with civ1 quickly moved to civ2 then i left the game for some years. I discovered civIII and it's really a good game.
I'm trying to make my way up to the various levels. My aim is to be able to beat the AI on emperor level. the settings i use are everything random.
i'm playing on monarch level at the moment. here is a sav attached of my last game, computer crashed after many turns so i have given up. i'd like to have advice regarding city placement, buildings etc...
I'd like to know if it's time for me to move to emperor or not, i think i should play a couple more games on monarch but you might think otherwise.

thanks in advance for your help

Hello there, viridomaros :)

Regarding the time to move up from Monarch to Emperor, in my opinion the answer lies within you. Are you winning comfortably at Monarch on a regular basis? Do you feel the desire to try Emperor? I believe that answering these questions may help you discover the answer.

And whatever else, the best way to find out is to go ahead and play a game at Emperor difficulty (although I recommend that you read this article, if you haven't already) :D

well i have won a couple monarch games. I can get a decent empire in many games but sometimes i'm still having problems when at war. Particularly in the middle game, the AI has the nasty habit to backstab me when i'm busy with someone else. As it is i think i need to play a couple more games on this level.
Thanks for the nice link, i'll have an eye on it.

I think a diplomatic victory the easiest. Wanting to win sounds great, but failing to play equals planning to fail. So, what victory condition do you want to plan for?

My game fails to upload your save, but from CivAssist I can get at least some info about your save:

* You've got 'respawn AI' on; this is a setting on the setup screen that lets an AI civ respawn once it gets destroyed. Almost nobody plays with this setting, are you sure you want to play with this setting on?

* Also; did you perhaps have 'Culturally linked start locations' on? I'm noticing all the American civs are in the game. You'll get them every single time when you leave this setting on, even when you're not American yourself, as this setting is broken. Best turn it off.

* I see no sign of exploration with boats. It looks like some remote civs have found you first before you went looking for them. Contacts are important! For trade, and especially on higher levels, war diplomacy.
For the time frame you're in, trading across the ocean - with Navigation or Magnetism - can become interesting soon. You're building a fair share of happiness buildings now, but discovering trade routes would allow you to trade for luxes, which would be a much smaller investment, so more effective.
Are you aware that the game mechanics allow you to land with boats on unsafe waters? Maybe your gut instinct says that you shouldn't do this, but do it anyway: 50% of survival each turn for non-seafaring civs. On a continents 70% water there's a good chance you'll meet other civs after a few tries, and then normally you'll see your trade options booming.

* Although you've got more attackers compared to defenders than most players uploading saves here, I would still swing the balance a bit more towards attacking units. Especially in your core and being in Republic, those pikes and spears are practically useless, as you can't realistically hope to brush away invaders with them - and you need to brush them away to not leave yourself vulnerable to acts of pillaging.

Regretfully, I couldn't look at your safe in game, so I can't look into your cities and stuff. Hopefully someone else can do that. Good luck!

thanks

i'm going to start a new game using the settings you mentionned. i Wasn't aware of that bug.

In that game i totally focused on expansion on the main land and i didn't allocate any ressources to sea exploration. Since you can't look at the game, let me tell you a bit about it.

I got a good start location i think with nice grass and a river for my capitol city. Then i had 2 or 3 wheats east along with other rivers and flood plain. i used 1 settler and 1 worker factory during the whole game.
I quickly figured i was on a continent with 3 other civs americans to the north east, incas to north west and the Mayas in south west. I kept expanding until there was no room left. Then i launched limited wars on the other civs, switching from one to another during the peace treaties.
Eventhough my empire was the biggest of the four i had no luxuries and when the game crashed i had four ( all conquered). Regarding contacts i decided to research printing since i knew the mayas or incas had contact with at least one other civ. Once i got the tech i traded to get all the contacts. I figured it would be cheaper and quicker this way than to research astronomy and navigation, anyway i was on my way for those.
Regarding the defenders/attackers ratio. i upgraded everything to musket once i got gunpowder and i was happy to have those when i was backstabbed a few times. What would be the ratio you'd go for?

would you strongly advise to use siege weapons? now i don't use them at all while in the past i had tens of those.
