It seems to me that down the road this is going to be a big decision to make. What do you think? Should we go to Republic and stick with it, go to Republic and live with it until we can get Monarchy, or Despotism until Monarchy and totally disregard Republic? Personally I like Republic because of the trade and science bonus, but what do you guys think?

We need the war benefits from Monarchy right now. So at least until this war is over, I say go for Monarchy.

I think swithcing governments during this war would be a really bad idea. Once the war is over, I definately prefer republic, especially since we have access to 3 luxuries without even trading. This debate is probably a little premature.

Eyrei, I think you're probobly right on both points. If we were religious that would be one thing, but since we're not 7 turns spent with no production esp. for the military wouldn't be good until we're out of this war.

And that means (so long as everyone is in agreement about no change till war is over) that we really need to look what we want to switch to, when peace is imminent.

I favor Republic for several reasons. The trade bonus is big in peacetime, and even during a war, you can raise the luxury rate to offset war weariness for a while and still come out ahead. In my experience, the trade bonus is not double, but it is at least a 50% increase in total trade. Therefore, even if you end up putting 30% of your trade into luxuries to offset the war weariness, you are no worse off than you were under monarchy.
And when you go back to peace, you don't have to have a revolution, you just bring the slider back down. Besides, since this is the Democracy game, I kind of lean toward keeping our nation in the more representative forms of government.

Either Monarchy or Republic. We need to advance to a high form of government as the game is moving much to quickly. I voted for Republic but as long as we evolve as a nation, that's what counts. 40 more turns in despotism?

Republic is thousands of times better than a monarchy and I suggest we research monarchy only for the hanging gardens

I agree. However, we would need to spend a leader to get the Hanging Gardens at this point, as the wonder cascade is about to begin.

If the estimates of 40 more turns of war are right, we may benifit more from switching early, We just have to get into a position that we're confident we can defend ourself with. I suggest we change only when we intend to take a purely defensive position for 7 turns, since any units lost in any offensive would be impossible to get back until we get to Republic.

Republic???????

With *THIS* level of war intensity, *NO* financial institutions (heck, do we even have currency?), zero military police, and zero troop support???

Madness, sheer madness (at this stage).

With the vile way our so-called neighbors have treated us, we're going to be in and out of war, likely against multiple civs at once.
There is one, and only one, justifiable government where we will be for a looooong time....

Monarchy. :hammer:

The question is when? With the Golden Age behind us, there's one less compelling reason. We can't afford to switch with troops right outside major cities, or as we're assaulting a foreign nation's capital. I would (probably) wait for the peace lull, when we have less than eight or so civs at war with us.

IMO, of course, but it's a pretty strong opinion in this case :P

The poll results are going to be misleading, I accidently voted for Republic, I meant to vote for despotism until monarchy.
