Yeah, after I'd made the Indian save, I was tempted by the Industrious workers but I decided to stick with my original plan. I figured that by the time Communism came round, eight or nine turns of Anarchy would be fairly likely.

Anyway, here's a picture showing the development of my economy since 1400 AD:

I'll be happy to post a save, tell me the year(s) you want (as of now I've reached 1750 AD [I won't be able to post them before Monday though]).

Regarding infrastructure, most of my cities are currently producing wealth, having already built a market/bank/stock exchange (upkeep free because of Smith's), courthouse/police station, aquaduct/hospital and factory/nuke plant (Hoover provides a Hydro Plant for cities without fresh water). When Robotics comes in they'll pause to produce Mfg. Plants too.

I have a number of Libs/Unis/Labs which I may sell when I decide to stop research, and I've also built Mass Transits and I will build recycling centres later on.

I thought trick #1 was awesome when I first started using it a while back, I've never thought of trick #2 though! Both are ways of crippling a runaway AI. If you can get an AI to run such a minus economy, pretty soon they will have 0 units and 0 buildings from having to disband 1 each turn!!!! You won't have to kill too many of their units when you later go to war.
 
@ Delphi: attached are the saves you requested.

The 1750 AD one shows one of my worst habits :blush:; close to the capital there are large stacks of settlers and native workers who should really have been used to maximise pop much sooner.

As I hinted at above, the final stash of gold could have been bigger if I had not been too lazy to work on maximising the pop sooner. Also, I was slow approaching the Domination Limit; I had been a little cautious with regard to exceeding the OCN but I don't think I was in any danger.

If anyone is interested the 2050 AD save is attached below.

Why size 20 metro's? its good for production, but you are not aiming at production. Why not irrigate all and let them grow way past size 20, then use tax collector specialist?

I didn't acutally do sums, I just assumed that shields going through factories and plants would generate more as wealth than I'd get from taxmen. Most of the specialists I did have were Policemen.

I suppose that using taxmen I might have been able to save some upkeep.


Edit:

I think that shield-poor cities (such as Kolhapur; the floodplains city North of the capital) possibly could have made more money if fully irrigated, but looking at the F1 info visible most places seem to be better off optimised for shields. For example, Tenoch...is the lowest-producing city visible (they're sorted by commerce) and that's making net 102 shields. Unless I'm mistaken 102 shields = 51 gold as Wealth which would take 26 taxmen to match.
Unfortunately, the legend for Tenoch... doesn't show on the empire screenshot, but I know that if it were fully irrigated it would generate 77 food, only enough to support 19-20 taxmen.

I think my plan only really works for the sake of maximum science, not gold.

All grassland (8 bonus grass) with nuke.

20 (mine) 20(rail) 8(bonus grass) 2(center) =50 base shields, 45 after corruption.
45 (nuke) 22.5(factory) 22.5(robotic plant) = 135 shields total!
=33 gold without economics
=67 gold with economics.
+2 from 1 specialist
69 gold in total. 9 upkeep for nuke/factory/robotic plant =60 gold

Now lets irrigate it all: Size 41
8 (bonus grass) 2(center) = 10 base shields, 9 after corruption.
9(nuke) 4.5(factory) 4.5(robotic plant) = 27 shields total!
=6 gold without economics
=13 gold with economics.
+42 from 21 specialist.
=55 gold in total. 9 upkeep =46 gold
