Random game I rolled Mongols, and at first I rolled my eyes
... but after playing they seem better now than before... although they are still not a top pic for me. So I played another game (this one public) and I had fun.
1. Ranged units stronger than before and those Keshiks have a much higher survival rate than in vanilla, meaning you can get to the cool later promotions such as the very useful "march" promotion.
2. Keshiks increase Khan generation, meaning you will get more citadels than your opponent (unless it is China.) With the 5 movement, you can suprise slip them in. With the 30% CS fighting bonus, I took over a few city states, got promoted Keshiks, got a Khan, then got a second Khan quickly and did a citadel chain right to the opponent's capital. Citadels are so dumb...
BUT - most people in public games don't make many cities, meaning that I can easily roll the entire map playing any civ... guys you need to get several cities out ASAP and keep an eye on F9. When playing opponents who know how to keep up on the demographics I don't rush the map, because then the 2 of us get locked in unproductive combat while everybody else techs ahead. But if they make 2 cities and I have 6 (cuz they didn't expand so I took their land) then rolling them is EZ and I can still tech.
ANYHOW - if I get Mongols vs good players on FFA then I will just take over city states and avoid costly wars... kind of like Austria except the city states i get are trashed...
