Monitor Crash

Okay, since three weeks ago, my monitor "crashes" occasionally, except with RoN. I cannot even get to the Gunpowder Age without my computer being shut down by my own monitor. My monitor is a 21" Dell Monitor which I've had for about... 4 years? I hope I do not have to get a new one, since my financial abilities are currently Nill. Any advice?

It is highly unlikely for the monitor to cause the computer to shut down. It is possible, however, for the video feed to the monitor to fail causing the monitor to show no signal, or some other problem with the computer to cause it to stop sending video to the monitor.

Do you have another monitor you can connect to the system for testing? If you do, and the problem continues to happen with the other monitor connected, then it is safe to say the 21" Dell monitor is probably not the problem.

Another troubleshooting step would be to try updating the driver for your video card. Also, the EventViewer (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer) might list some useful information about what might be causing the problem.

If you have have other questions on this I will be more than happy to answer them.

I just found out that it is my video card dying out :(. Maybe it's getting too old, since it was able to play it a year ago.

Did you already try updating the video driver?

If you can send me the service tag for the computer (assuming it is also a Dell) I can check to see if it is still covered by warranty. You can email me at customer_advocate@dell.com with 'ATTN: Larry' in the subject line to make sure it gets to me.

I don't have a Dell computer.

I'll try looking for Radeon drivers, hope it works :)

It's possible that your video card is overheating. Clean the dust from the heatsink and check if the fan works properly. If not replace it.

Another option would be to try the video card in a computer that isn't having problems to see if the problem follows the video card. Trying another video card on your system can also help (if it has the problem as well, it might not be the video card).

BTW, does the monitor work fine on another computer? I am guessing it does, but I want to make sure (since that is something I could do something about if it was having problems).

I've just posted about this in the official forums, I hope to get a reply there.

Ask a moderator to move this to computer talk. It'll find it's audience better there.
