Before you do anything, have you tried deleting the cache before any new games? I tried it last night and it worked for me. Tried to load a new game... *piff* monitor powered down. Removed the cache as described here:
1. In windows turn on the setting to see hidden files
This is under Tools --> Folder Options, then the View tab.
2. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\My Games\Civilization IV
3. If there is a folder called "cache" in there, delete the folder.
4. Run the game.
I started a new game just fine, and go figure, put in the wrong Civ for my wife (we were doing a hotseat). So, I started a new game, and guess what? Monitor powered down... When I cleared that file
again, it worked again. I'm assuming you have to do it before every new game.
I wonder how hard a subroutine to clear that file out when a new game is started would be to code. Since I know very little about coding, I can only guess... and hope it's easy.
