1. Load Game
2. Select Options
3. Game begins
4. Monitor goes to standby and cannot get out.

Dell 2005FPW Monitor
NVIDA GeoForce 6600GT (latest patch 10/05)
Windows XP Service Pack 2
P4 1.82GHZ 512MB Ram

This is usually a problem with refresh rate or resolutions which are set either too high or low. In civ4 options you can change both refresh rates and resolutions so I suggest you try and put refresh rate to 60Hz and change around the screen resolutions.

I dont have civ 4 yet, but had the same thing when I upgraded to a 6600gt - as soon as it switched into 3d mode, the graphics card would hang (and the monitor goes into standby).

Needed mobo bios update and several different nvidia drivers to get a stable system that worked (also went through 2 power supplies because I thought that was the problem at first - not enough power - but it was just bios and drivers). Oh, this only related to dx9.0c which I'd installed at the same time to get 3dmark05 running.

Sounds like you got the same thing (ie nothing to do with civ).

What is mobo bios update and where do I get it?

Might read this thread... http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/printthread.php?t=4458

Before you do anything, have you tried deleting the cache before any new games? I tried it last night and it worked for me. Tried to load a new game... *piff* monitor powered down. Removed the cache as described here:

1. In windows turn on the setting to see hidden files
This is under Tools --> Folder Options, then the View tab.

2. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\My Games\Civilization IV

3. If there is a folder called "cache" in there, delete the folder.

4. Run the game.

I started a new game just fine, and go figure, put in the wrong Civ for my wife (we were doing a hotseat). So, I started a new game, and guess what? Monitor powered down... When I cleared that file again, it worked again. I'm assuming you have to do it before every new game.

I wonder how hard a subroutine to clear that file out when a new game is started would be to code. Since I know very little about coding, I can only guess... and hope it's easy.
