How do you tell exactly how far apart two stars are when you don't have a warp 1 ship parked at one of them? The grid via ALT-M isn't helping so hopefully there is an easy way to tell.

You either become good at guessing or you could select to launch troops to the planet, if it habitable to you. That will tell you how long it will take. The troops travel at your engine speed -1. rounded down. A min of 1.

If you have a ship, send it and see how long and divide by the engine speed. Don't forget to cancel the orders.

Yeah I screwed that up, will edit it. I need to proof read my writing.

That's ok. I knew how transports work in that regard anyway.

The reason why I asked this question is because I don't see any reason to bother with defense at any star that the AI's nearest colony can't reach. But I forgot about reserve fuel tanks. Does the AI make a habit of putting these into fighters, missile or bomber designs?

I don't think I've seen the AI do that, but better to be safe than sorry. Don't completely neglect defenses on colonies the AI can't reach yet, because eventually they will get the fuel cells they need to reach it. And when they do, they will strike you where you are weakest.

If you still feel that you don't want to build defenses on those planets, at the very least make sure that the planetary shield is built so that you don't find yourself unable to build any missile bases when the computer catches you off guard.

Also be aware that as their miniaturization level increases, AIs do end up with armed, LR colships. And I've also found that, as Megafrost points out, Impossible AIs may suddenly show up with ridiculously advanced range tech and the will to attack your core worlds at any time.

I tend to not put up bases in places that the AI will not be attacking. You will get pretty good at figuring that out. You have to watch out for the AI and its reach as they like to get in the early alliances and now a race that was way out of the picture can get to you.
Sometimes these alliances only last a few turns.

I like to make sure I have one or two bases up even at backline worlds, so that I have something there behind the shield if I need to go on a crash base-building program and wind up having to build several layers of shielding before I can pump any bases out.
