MoO3 Release Date!

One thing to keep in mind. People's opinions on MoOIII (on the other side of the fence) have been EXTREMELY polarized. It appears that you either absolutely adore it - or utterly hate and despise it. It's very hard to tell which camp is in the majority (the latter are much more vocal, which makes any sort of count very hard), but there are seemingly very few people in the middle.

I have been following the reviews pretty carefully. The most interesting comment I have seen went something like this:
You will not like the game at first while you're climbing the steep learning curve, then you will start to think that you have too little control over your empire's fate. Only after gaining considerable experience will you realize that this is an extremely deep and rich game.
I expect this will prove to be the case for most serious strategy types. I do have one major concern, though - patches. They are already working on a PC patch. Is this going to be Civ III all over again? They get patched, they we get patched, then they get patched, etc., etc. I just hope we don't come up one patch short of a game again.:cringe:

The reviews don't seem to be reflecting the opinions of the people playing the game very well. Monitoring MoOIII forums turns up a distressing volume of comments about how horrible/broken/unfun the game is - even after spending 30-40 hours playing and learning. There are also quite a few taking the other side - but the reviews aren't capturing either side's opinions very well, AFAICT.

There is also known to be at least one major bug that, for many people, prevents point defense from doing anything at all - making missiles WAY overpowered.

Now, I'm not saying the game is bad - my preorder still stands, and I expect I'll probably enjoy it. People should just be aware that it's not all coming up roses.

The problems seem relatively minor. I imagine most of the obvious ones will be fixed with the first patch. I just wonder when we get the patch. Meanwhile, I'll be honing my skills. I expect to get a lot of play out of Moo3 over a long period so I'm not too worried about a few initial glitches - yet.

I imagine I'll find the game enjoyable. Having no previous exposure to the MoO series, in this case, might be a blessing. Its hard to accept a new game within a series. What I mean is, people gave Firaxis a hard time for making Civ 2.5; however, Civ3 is a great game. The Civ theme is what its about. Sci-fi has much more leeway in this regard. Getting a different approach to game-play seems to have really blown the MoO veterans away. I wonder how the MoO newbies are fairing.

I've always felt it's better to judge a game on its own merits rather than to compare it to previous versions. I played heck out of Moo1 & 2, but that won't have any effect on my opinion of Moo3. Same goes for CivI, II and III. Seems to me that the only fair comparison would be to rate the games on the basis of how they compared to other games when they were first released. On that basis, I think Civ II beats Civ III, even though I feel Civ III is the better game overall. Your mileage may vary.

Good point, senecasax. I think that it is the modding community that add so much to most of these games. Who could enjoy Civ3 as much without Snoopy's graphics? The modding community adds successive degrees of novelty that keep us playing between patches and expansion packs. I could do without the endless patches, 'tho.

Mac Moo3 went gold today and will now ship March 25th. The PC patch is already in the works - I hope this isn't going to be another Civ III-style nightmare where we wind up one patch short of a full game.

I want to love this baby, but I think I'll let it grow past puberty before I wipe the cobwebs from my wallet.

I feel better about patch parity w/ QS since its done in-house. But, I do think its unlikely that our version will be released w/ the patch improvements, they'll come later.

Quote by QS Programming staff over at IG/MoO3 forum. It appears the first Mac MoO3 patch is going to be released the same time as the PC patch.

"The actual release of the patches will be controlled by the QA departments at Infogrames (for Windows) and Destineer (for Macintosh)."

Hey Dojo - long time...

Any sign of the release? I pre-ordered but seem to be in waiting limbo and can't find any indication that the mac version was released on schedule. I guess we shouldn't be surprised, but still, I want my aliens NOW.

Let me know if you hear anything.

Its shipping. IMG got their stock yesterday. Unfortunately, Chips&Bits has not, which is where I preordered it, to save $5.
