I'd enjoy being in my comp corner
Trying to make the projectmove forward:)

There are six levels of difficulty in SMAC. I don't remember the names of them off hand, but it would be nice to know what level you mostly play so that the GOTM will be enjoyable for all participants. There's simply no point in going directly for the most difficult level if it isn't even close to the nomal level people use.

It could be a level or two higher than the most preferred playing level.

Comments?

Other comments that also could be included in this game is how you feel about the different victory conditions. Should all be on? Or some turned off. How about blind research and spoils of war?

What would a good first GOTM game look like?

I'm not sure a poll limited to one aspect - the difficulty level is going to be that helpful.

In my thread I have attempted to address as many of the issues - the ground rules - that need to be established before a gotm can get underway successfully. Perhaps there should be a more coordinated attempt based on the successful model established by the Civ2 GOTM. With the limited number of people showing interest at the moment it's certainly worthwhile to combine resources rather than repeatedly re-inventing the wheel.

Well, when I was playing it religiously, I played on level 5. The SMAC/X GOTM will be my first full game in over a year. Um, level 3 for me.

I actually thought that the poll would be helpful in that way that we don't have to look at every post and memorize who likes what level.

Further comments can be posted here or in the other thread. I think no cheating, using bugs to your advantage should be allowed. But as I don't know any cheats I can hardly use them other than by mistake. And in that case it would be better if someone would post a list of bugs one might use by mistake rather than have everybody read through that interesting, but truly exhausting list of bugs you posted.

What I further would like to find out is things like should all victory conditions be on? Spoils of war? Fog of war? And so on.

The Civ2 GOTM score is a bit bad in that way, that it awards a fast finnish too much extra points. As I see it. If you make pacts with everybody except one, and the co-operatively distroy that one faction you'll get an extremely fast co-operative victory.

The maximum number of turns... Is there a limit in SMAC? I've never reached it;) as I've always ended with transcendence.

One good option in SMAC is the iron-man-option (saving and loading limited to exiting and starting the game. Unless someone is desperate, that should keep people from reloading. But on the other hand I don't think GOTMers reload even if they wanted to, but maybe this is just me.

Know I'll have to start thinking about my custom avatar:D This being my 300th post. Yehaa!

I'm currently playing a Transcend game, but the outcome's in doubt. Level 4 or so would be nice.

Also, turning on Ironman is a good idea.

I think we could get a game under way in March. From the poll it seems, though with not very big a margin  that a level-3 game could be the best option to start with and then we'll move on from there. I think iron-man could be on.

But otherwise I think it'd be best to jump right in and discuss what works and what doesn't during the game.

Does someone feel like voluntarily making a game, and posting it, with details on the options turned on and off and so on?

If waiting till March seems stupid because than it will be played the same time as CIV2-GOTM, we could have some other date like 15th of Month - 14 of Month.

What about submission? How are we gonna take care om them. Do we only post our results at the end of the playing period or should we make save-games and send them to someone, and in that case what years? Every 100 years? and before end of game?

It's been a while since I last played regularly (it still happens from time to time, but now I mostly play Civ2 or Civ3).
So when I play SMAC now it's rather level 2 or 3, with standard rules.

I'm not here too often, so if someone would contact me when this starts, I'd appreciate it. I'm kundor@cwru.edu.

I think standard procedure is to send a save game to the person running the thing, yes, so they can make a table of scores and stuff. Having just the end save game would be fine.

I usually play on Librarian (4), though I can also beat Thinker (5). However, I've recently had fun trouncing the AI through Talent (3). The ability to cluster SPs is huge!
