Most feared Civ Special Unit

My question is, which special unit do you most dread meeting from your Civ opponents?

Lately, the one that's caught me out is Russia's Cossack. There I was last night (playing as America) patiently waiting to develop Replacement Parts, and make that important move to Infantry; keeping the peace with everyone; dominating my continent; and staying comfortably ahead in terms of score.

Suddenly, those damn Greeks finally transgress once to often on my small foreign outpost of 3 cities (on their continent) and this time they prefer war to my patient demands for their removal.

Ok no problem, I may even lose those 3 cities but I figure they're expendable. Suddenly, the Greeks form an alliance with my Northernmost neighbours the Russians, who quickly sweep down (through the small English territory) and start popping off my cities. There are COSSACKS everywhere! I quickly draft a few citizens and hussle them northwards but a handful of conscript riflemen are no match for the agressive cossacks. The Russians end up taking 10 of my cities in the space of a few turns.

So my most 'feared' opponent is definitely Cossack. Notably because the equivilant stage of defensive unit is only Rifleman and unless they're veterans or better, they tend to get wiped out very quickly.

Personally I hate hoplites most of all.

When I try an early-game rush, I have very limited resources. I quickly put together a small contingent of archers, horsemen, and/or swordsmen and send them off into the unknown to quickly reduce my nearest neighbor to dust before they can get too established. If I'm lucky, they won't even have spearmen built in their capital and they'll be easy pickings.

Not so when I encounter Greeks. They get their hoplites up and in place faster than I can make contact. If I run into them, there's no point in even trying to defeat them with the meager forces I can muster so early. Against spearmen they'll take losses, but have a good chance at success. Against hoplites they're as good as dead. So at this point I find I've wasted a lot of valuable early-game time and resources sending my assault force in their direction. The time spent traversing from my territory to theirs is now lost, and now I must retrace my steps and start off in a different direction, hoping to carve some living space for myself before I get boxed in by the AI, knowing I'll be arriving much later than I had originally hoped.

Next comes cossacks and panzers. 3MP units can be deadly.

I fear Immortals in the ancient era, samuari in the middle ages, and nothing after I have significant numbers of infantry.

Jaguar Warriors are probably the bain of my civ3 existence. They come in early and just take over and start dominating every thing that I have.

Hoplites, no question about it, for two reasons. First, I'm often an aggressive player early in the game. I'll try to box in or knock down a rival early on. Hoplites make that difficult. Second, if I don't declare war on the Greeks they declare war on me, and send those pesky Hoplites to pillage my territory. How to kill a Hoplite perched on a hill, preparing to destroy a mine?

If some UUs seem to suit the AI better in the games I've played, then it's probably the Impi & Jag. They seem easier for the AI to manage with the extra move & protect cites against my horseman rush a lot better.

Cossacks & Samurai aren't bad either because the AI seems to leave them scattered around my territory and they are a little tougher to kill off.

Well I fear no noone. That's because my strategy is a sneaky one, I share maps and tech with the other nations to keep them pleased and make sure I have a strong economy. Sometime in the game some nation will attack you... by that time I have 6000+ gold and when the attack comes - I buy military alliances with at least 2 of the aggressors neighbours. That is a strategy that has yet to fail me >:)

I fear the Jaguars and I hate the Hoplites.
Fortunately I play Aztex myself most of the times.

Jags, Immortals, Hoplites when I`m attacking (sometimes they take out 5 Knights in a row!), Impi - but except for the Jag Warrior they are just a nuisance. When I see a Warrior - albeit with retreat ability - take out my fortified Spearman in a walled town on a hill across a river without loosing even 1 HP, and then another 15 show up.....

Legions...their capacity to attack and defend equally well (and HOW!) makes them a formidable opponent.

That`s why I so often play as the Romans :D

For me: Hoplites (the best defenders until Musketmen/Musketers), Legionnaires and Immortales. Also Riders but only if I don't have Cavalry yet.

Mounted Warriors are dangerous but it is possible to kill them with Horsemen. Jaguar Warriors are irritating but usually not dangerous (unless one of the RNG Miracles occurs). Maybe Panzers could fear me but in fact I have never seen them ;)

I hate Immortals. I hate Xerxes. I hate everything about the Persians.

If I ever find myself on the same continent with Persians, I try to cut them off from Iron and reduce their empire to insignificance. If I can't do that, then I bide my time until I get Cavalry and then smash the buggers.

Unless they kill me with hordes of Immortals first. I hate the damn Persians.

Well, for me it would have to be the F15... HAHA! Only joking. Seriously though, I hate the Indian War Elephant. They never seem to die. You can keep throwing knights at them but to no avail, and their as good as knights on the attack as well. Unfortunately, my main war strategy is to cut off any resource that the AI needs for a war. Obviously, this doesn't work for War Elephants, which leaves me screwed. Second comes immortals.

Immortals are a very nice unit to attack with because you need alot less Immortals to ake over an empire than if you were using archers etc. Also Iron is one of the most reliable resources to have at least one source so it is easy to start churning them out...

I probably dislike Hoplites the most. They essentially mean that I can't declare war on the Greeks until later in the game, and I can't defend very well if the Greeks attack me.

:tank: The most feared special unit is definitely the german panzer,
when they comes flowing in over your borders in massive numbers then you don't want to be in their way. :tank:

Personally, I fear no 1-move unit. I fear Impis. 1/2/2. Ick. Hard as hell to kill, death to horsemen... aggressive bugger named Shaka leading them... I hate them. Luckily, if I'm the Babylonians, I am "culturally grouped" with the Zulu (heh, that's funny) and can usually keep them happy until Impi are obselete and no longer scare me (chivalry).
