Most feared Civ Special Unit

Personally, I fear no 1-move unit. I fear Impis. 1/2/2. Ick. Hard as hell to kill, death to horsemen... aggressive bugger named Shaka leading them... I hate them. Luckily, if I'm the Babylonians, I am "culturally grouped" with the Zulu (heh, that's funny) and can usually keep them happy until Impi are obselete and no longer scare me (chivalry).

I usually get a good laugh out of the hordes of hopelessly obsolete Impi running around in the industrial age. Do they even have an upgrade path?

I think they do upgrade, but having never played as the Zulu, I'm not 100% sure. Basically, I just want to keep them off my back until the Middle Ages... they want a piece of me then, fine, come get some, Shaka.

I had a beautiful position as Egypt; grassland and mountains, flood plain and hills. Truly, a land of milk and honey. Spearmen in every city, a couple of swordmen for backup. Suddenly, an army of Persian Immortals crested the hill. Alas, all our plans for naught.

Probably, if any, the hoplite. That is one reason I iplay Greeks often. I have been attacked by impi's and mounted warriors. They have never been a serious threat. Never encountered Rome when she had iron early... love to play the samauri, though, so would hate to have to defend against them.

I'd have to say Panzers, but it's rare that my games ever get to the industrial age. I don't share the fear of hoplites, but I usually play Rome and legionairres go through hoplites like a hot knife through butter. In fact, once I've got my legions I don't fear any ancient or early middle age unit.

Except for Babylonian bowman, the horror, the horror...

Zachriel, it`s good to hear that things like that happen to you, too! But I`m kinda temoted to ask: what happened to your superior numbers? ;)

Ah hmm. I, I. . . . I think my lawyer had better address this issue with the courtmartial tribunal.

I hated immortals but this game I am Xerxes... Usually play Romans or Japan. Militiristic is how I would like to play... with CivIII

I dislike legionaires when I'm noot Rome!!!!

Immortals - partially because they win a lot more than they lose but equally because they never seem to show up in less than nearly overwhelming numbers.

Hoplites are probably second but only bother me if the Greeks are close, otherwise I'll rarely run into them before I'm dealing with pikemen anyway.

samurai! i hate fighting these units! defends as well as musketman, prevents retreat, defense is equal to your knight's attack... if you see one parked on a moutain you might as well forget about attacking it until calvary (even then you may have trouble)

i love the samuri .... i think it kicks butt ... 4/4/2 knights ..... AND they are by far the coolest looking units in the game!! ... but i dont think the AI can use them properly ... so i dont fear them when the AI has em ... but i make sure they fear me!! ... i love em because u can take citys then defend them very well

None of them give me any trouble. Maybe because I'm so good?

Or could it be that I play on chieftan?

I hate Panzer's. They come as a horde and they are a match even for modern armor and they do not bother with defending. Nothing more joyful then to see columns of panzers tearing your border apart. Tactical Nuke is a valid option.Maybe I have Post-Panzer-Angreif-Trauma.:crazyeye:

Special units have never given me any trouble - I fear nothing (except nuke). At one point in one of my game, I was playing France and a stack of over 30+ Immortals heading my ways. And the worst part is that I have a total of 17 horsemen - there is no way in hell I can stand a chance against 30+ Immortals....but in the end, 11 of my horsemen survived and I gain three cities from Persia.:) Am I good or what?;)

You probably are wondering how I did it...

1. I evacuated all units out of my cities and left it wide open for the taking. Therefore, that stack of Immortals moving through my lovely city street unchallenged.

2. While the enemy are enjoying the view of my lovely cities, I move my little stack of 17 horsemen to invade their homeland. Since my horsemen can move twice as fast, by the time they turned 180 degree around, it's already too late, I already got one of their city and moving toward the next.

3. I don't event bother defending these newly conquerred city. I just leave it wide open for those Immortals to retake it.

To make a long story short, I'm playing cat and mouse chase with that stack of dead until they are willing to sign a peace treaty. The moment I knew peace talk is possible. I threw everything I had to take three towns from Persia then I signed the peace treaty.:) In most case, if I'm strong enough to fight, I will run away. There is really no shame in running away.:D

I've only had to deal with an over run of panzers once and that was enough. The only thing that saved me was drafting mech infantry. I fought back and won but at a terrible cost.
War elephants are a real pain too as I try to resource deprive my opponants and that strategy doesn't work for idia as stated so eloquently by someone else.
Beyond that, I am able to deal with all UUs.
Hoplites are bad but oly if I start near the Greek which has only happened once and all I did was wait until I had cavalry and then I over ran them. :D

Of course, all this goes without nominating the most powerful UU : the spearman. It's unique not because it's civ-specific but because it has a secret laser buried inside the spear that can destroy heavy armors like a knife through hot butter.

Oh be wise, Ken Oh be ?

(sorry Daaraa ;) )

I dont fear any AI UU because they dont know how to wage a succesfull war ( regent level, without cheating).

But i ll tell you , they fear my panzer ( combine with bomber). Panzer can move 3 tile and attack 16. IMHO panzer rocks.

I HATE the English Man-Of-War, they build a lot and they surround your sea borders, allies or not. If your at war with them, they come in and weaken you. Then the ground units come. So goodbye Germany!

P.S. What happened to the new smilies?

By the time AI can have a naval task force of frigate or man o war, i usually have a few iron clad to protect my coast. It is strategicaly essantial, when playing continent or archipelago to take a lead in naval warfare. So a few ironclad ( 6-8) will stop any incoming threat from the sea. Soon after, destroyer came in and battleshipe.
That s why i found salpeter a non -essential ressource for german.
