The 80s had cool cartoons, and in 99,9% of cases they were about Good fighting Evil.
That said, very few of those shows actually had anything sinister; they tended to be campy.
It wasn't the case for the infamous INHUMANOIDS, a show so dark that it got cancelled after the first season - yet it still managed to make an impression and sell a few toys :yup:

Some sequences from the awesome and brooding Inhumanoids, where vast monsters lived below the ground and occasionally dismembered or transformed humans into something better.

"Inhumanoids; the evil that lies within.
From down in the fiery depths of the earth where nightmares begin"

You can suggest your own contender; it is futile though, cause Inhumanoids> other cartoons.

"home movies" is messed up, but in a different way. imho it is by far the best cartoon show ever made and has a special brand of humor that is impossible to replicate. coach mcguirk is an inspiration. it's not particularly dark though, or at least not directly. the way I introduced it to my friends way: "this is a highly autistic cartoon with terrible animation and amateur voice acting and you're gonna sit through it all."

home movies is from the guy(s) who went on to make bob's burgers and features a lot of the cast, so you know it's quality stuff.

both the boondocks and afro samurai are violent and full of swearing, but actually really, really good.

and then of course everything adult swim, like.. everything. robot chicken, seaworld, but especially aqua teen hunger force. they're all really good.

regular show and adventure time are sorta messed up, especially psychologically, but mostly superficial. they're nice though.

Happy Tree Friends.

hate that show. even in my edgy teen phase I thought it was dumb. definitely one of the most messed up, though. there was also drawn together, almost equally violent and almost equally bad.

A show with no redeeming qualities what-so-ever.

Bugs Bunny. Honestly, when I was a kid I had no idea how sexist and racist that cartoon was (along with the associated ones like Tweety and Sylvester). I'm not too fond of the Roadrunner one, either, although there's a Star Trek fan film production company that did an homage to the Acme company in one of their parodies of AbramsTrek (hint: it would appear that James Cawley - who played Kirk in most of the episodes - isn't fond of AbramsTrek).

Boonie Bears, especially when you don't understand what they are saying. Seems a classic (like Bugs Bunny in the US) as it was on several channels and almost the only cartoon to be found on Chinese TV.
