I can't figure out how the retreating or not decision for a mounted unit works. I know that it will not retreat if both attacking and defending units have only one life left, but I thought that in any other situation, when the mounted unit got red, then it would retreat. I have seen situations were the defending unit wasn't red, the attacking mounted unit had space to get back and died without retreating.
So how does it trully works ? Is it some kind of random, or does a kind of terrain control like in previous civs still intervenes ?

The Civiliopedia says that the unit will retreat if it's losing unless fighting another fast unit. Maybe that's it?

Right, I forgot to tell that it didn't concern a defending fast unit (it last happened between a knight and an archer).

If all the requirements for retreat is met, then there is a chance based on the experience levels of the units invovled. If the attackers experience is high then the chance is increased, if the defenders experience is high it is decreased.

It was corrected at some point to have a percentage for retreated based primarily on it experience. IOW a vet is more likely to retreat than a regular.

It's a probability thing. An elite unit is more likely to retreat than a veteran. See the "Experience Levels" tab in the Editor; I think it is Conscript:34, Regular:50; Veteran:58; Elite:66. Personally, I prefer 34/50/75/100.

However, that is not all there is to it. An elite is less likely to retreat from another elite than from a veteran unit, and is most likely to retreat from a conscript. Therefore, you could modify an Elite's retreat probability to 100% and it still wouldn't retreat at every opportunity, due to the opponent's experience. This has been tested, thought I don't remember what percentages were found.

So when "The Civiliopedia says that the unit will retreat if it's losing unless fighting another fast unit.", that's not necessarily true?

Not accurate would be a better way to discribe it, because it does happen. Just not every time.

It should read "could" retreat. I can't remember, but I think originaly they would retreat adn at that time the statement was correct.

But the pedia is known to be less than perfect.

The Civiliopedia says that the unit will retreat if it's losing unless fighting another fast unit.
It means, when a Knight attack a Pike,or defend from a MDI,it has chance to retreat. But if a Knight fights another Knight,Samurai or Elephant,it will never retreat.
It also implies Cavalry or Rider can retreat from Knights and Tanks.

Also, to clarify something else - in my experience, a unit will not retreat if it its opponent is currently at 1HP (even if the opponent is not a fast unit). Is this true, or have I simply been having bad luck with retreats?

I've had several occurences of this, Quantum, and I'd think it's more like if the attacker just brought down the defender to 1HP, it will press the attack. On a side note, I have never made an attack with a 1HP unit (yeah I do that sometimes and shouldn't) and have it retreat at some point.

It's called 'fight to the death' when both units are redlined. I think it's in the civilpedia someplace, but I could be wrong. Basically, when both units have only 1 hp left (maybe two) retreat is not an option.
