MP noob - how do you get a friend to "find" you on MP?

Totally new to MP. The UI is so damn confusing. If you have a friend you want to play with over the internet, how do you "find" each other and start a game together? Do you find each other by username? If so, what's my username??

if you are friends on steam, you can just pm each other. you can invite each other to a game via steam chat, but clicking on there name and click invite, or they can click on you and click Join Game.

Thank you! Now it all makes sense - everything is done through Steam, not through the game screens... And yes i will definitely check out that forum!
