Hey all,

Been a while since I've been here. I play the game every other year or so.

I recently acquired an MT-32, and wanted to try it out with Civ, as I remembered it was one of the games supporting it. I was quite disappointed when my copy only plays music in the intro, and is completely silent the rest of the game. No music on any other screen of the game, no unit effects. Just completely silent. The display on my MT-32 still reads "[MPS Civilization]". I tried again, same thing, intro but then silence afterwards.

Also curious if there are any other options in any versions of the game, like CivWin, like mixing MIDI and digital effects. What's the best experience with MT-32 music?

Welcome back, that doesn't sound right at all, I've only ever used emulation for mt32 but you certainly should be getting leader tunes during diplomacy etc and sound effects for battles. How have you got it setup?

Windows won't help you I'm afraid, low quality wavs are used for all music and sound. DOS is the way to go for sure.

I use MUNT, a MT-32 emulator for Windows. I use it to play civilization 1 in dos-box-x a free emulator for ms-dos.

I set the CPU to 80486-dx 33 mhz just as my real 80486 machine.

To actually use the MT-32 in dos-box-x the conf file must be changed slightly.

Also to actually use the MT-32 device option 5 must be chosen when the civ1 game is started when the menus display.

If you don't see any menus it might be a wrong or bad version of civilization, not sure if such a thing exist but it might.

Perhaps a real MT-32 might also need some ms-dos driver and some IRQ settings and DMA settings.

Probably 5 or 7 or 10 for IRQ and/or 1 or 5 for DMA... consult MT32 manual and/or search on internet for correct settings...

Maybe also some kind of MPU port or something... not sure.

How do you play civilization via a real computer with real ms-dos or a dos emulator running in windows ?

Also the MUNT emulator loads some ROM file or something... maybe the MT-32 also needs this... not sure...
