I purchased PTW and installed it on my PC which is connected to my home network. I also burned a copy for my other PC on the network. I am able to play other multiplayer games on my home network, so I know the network works. I am also able to play from the burned copy in single-player mode. What am I doing wrong? I also installed the 1.27 patch on both PC's before I even started playing.

I would help you but since its illegal, I'm not gonna. Get two legal copies of the game and than I will suggest what could be going on.

dunno if this is right, but try local internet instead of LAN

It is not illegal to make a copy of software or any other recorded material for my personal use in my home. It IS illegal to make copies and give to others. I am using my copies in my home on MY computers. If you want to help fine, but don't hide behind legal mumbo-jumbo.

It IS illegal to make copies even if you are not disptributing them. The fact that you bought the game once and have duplicated it without consent from the company is illegal.

Read the copyright laws. It is legal to make copies of ANY copyrighted material for your personal use. What you are NOT allowed to do is make copies and distribute it to others. Like I said, if you want to help fine, if not buzz off.

TO further clarify, I checked with the modirator before I posted and the site doesn't consider it wrong either.

Fine.

I had a problem similar to this. My computers both are registered by online gaming as having the same ip. My router also comes in to play with this when I try to do any games that require the IP address. Since they are registered as the same IP, a person cannot host a game on computer A and connect to it on computer B, I tried this (too much). The router also affects the game(s) as I am unable to host a multiplayer game for Civ or RoN. The game just doesn’t show up because of the router. I can play when I join, but hosting is out of the question. So, you could try what I did. I had someone host the game for us, and he would bail once the game had started. Doesn’t work because once say computer A connects to the game, computer B will automatically get a message about the firewall.

You say you can play other mp games. I have played Q3, CS, RoN and a variety of other games. These are different because of the gamespy crap.

Easy way to check ip (though I assume you know). www.whatismyip.com

Thanks for the insight Wildfire. What I have been trying, and it is working, is using my Civ 3 CD in the second computer. That allows a game, but it crashes deep in the game. I have also been able to host a game with the burned CD and joining with the original. Oh well, the important thing is that my kids are learning to play Civ and it is something we cando together. Thanks for the help.

No problem :crazyeye:

Just go easy on the kids ;) If you beat them to much, they'll hate the game :p

Here's our situation. We've got two virtually identical pc's. Both run to a router (NetGear RP614v2) which runs to a cable modem. The one 'stick in the mud' so to speak, is that one pc (her's) runs WinXP, whereas mine runs Win98SE. I'm aware of the basic requirements for, and differences between, playing a multiplayer match on the internet and on a private LAN (or WAN actually). Our router's technical data indicates that it has no problem distinguishing between and making automatic provisions for doing both. In the recent past we had no problems with either pc detecting the other through C3PTW's LAN window (where you see what games are currently open). Now however (after a reloading of WinXP on her pc) we can no longer see each other. We've disabled XP's little automatic firewall. I've got ZoneAlarm on mine but have told it to enable all available ports for this (and other) games (which really shouldn't be an issue since ports apparently only come into play with access outside the LAN. QuakeIII and UT2K have no issues in this whatsoever and I'm thinking that the answer to all this lies somewhere in that fact. TCP/IP is, apparently, set up properly on both (we've read all the hints and tips we can dig up). And both of us have independent internet access as well as file and print sharing (which works fine).
Anybody out there have a clue?
