Multiplayer and AI?

This may seem like a simple question, but I haven't seen it addressed anywhere, so I want to be absolutely certain:

Can mulitiplayer games also have AI players? So you have two human players and say 6 AI players.

I would think so.

But also in the gamespot article I heard it mentioned that the AI can take over for a human player if need be or something so I'm guessing yes.

well taht is a good idea, in case the otehr person disconects, their whole Civ wont simply vanish ^_^
