Hello all,

I have two old laptops that I don't use for anything, but they aren't quite old enough to throw away yet. I'm thinking about putting in 32 GB SSDs and installing lightweight Linux distros on them so that I can play Civilization IV on them. (The only thing that I would use these laptops for is Civ.) I read @damunzy 's 2009 guide on playing Civ through Wine, but I'm wondering if there have been any recent developments that might allow me to play multiplayer Civ on Linux. I'm pretty new to the realm of Linux gaming (although I have experience with both Linux and gaming), so I would appreciate any thoughts/comments/suggestions that anyone might have.

Merry Christmas!

To be more specific, I would like to know if Civ IV on Linux will work with multiplayer games, especially if some of the computers run Windows 10 and some run Linux. I have read that multiplayer won't work on Linux, but I don't know if that is true or not.

Hello SaintSaens_Op61,

if you use the Non-Steam multiplayer modes of Civ4:BTS you could play with Linux/Wine and Windows clients in the same game.
We're playing PB games (PB server runs on Wine) and users with Windows & Linux for years. In my opinion the hardest part is the wine setup, not MP.

See https://www.realmsbeyond.net/forums/showthread.php?tid=7544 for more specific information about the multiplayer modes of Civ4 in these days.

That's good to know that PB can have Windows and Linux clients in the same game! I'll have to try that.
