multiplayer freeze

got the following problem: me and a friend of mine started a game of civ yesterday and played several hours withour experiencing any problems except for the lag. when we were trying to load the saved game, it continously froze after about 5-10 seconds of play...however, sound continued playing.
i've been searching through this forum and couldn't find anything comparable to this, so please help.

Is it 100% repeatable?

yeah, definitely! tried it several times

we "fixed" the problem by using the freshest autosave though, worked fine after that
