Recently me and a friend have played a IP game with an interesting twist. Although it is not a true variant like the cool things they do on Realms Beyond (cool place, if you've never been there you should go and try out the epics) it still adds some fun and realism.
What we did was name all the units except for settlers and workers like this example of the first warrior produced in New York's name:
1st New York Assualt
we did this and we are still playing that game. it makes it more interesting and as a fringe benefit for those playing, you know which of the other's cities is building the most units (just in case).
The warrior line of upgrades (warrior-sword- med. infantry-guerrilla) is called assualt like the above example.
the spearmand line of upgrades is infantry.
the chariot line is cavalry.
the catapult line is artillery
the archer line is archers (probably should be different for Vikings)
Boats are named like USS (name here) or whatever you want to call it in relation to your nation.
This is one of my own suggested multi variants and i am eager to see what other people are trying or may try especially any of those from Realms Beyond who may happen upon this thread.
