Multiplayer w/ 56K?

Is it possible to run/enter multiplayer with a 56 modemK? The game freezes when I try to enter multiplayer after entering my login information. It's unfortunate that I can't even use CTRL-ALT-DEL to end task the game. Is this because of my dialup? I run the game in 1280 x 1024.

Specs:
- P4 @ 3.2Ghz
- 1GB Ram
- ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
- SmartLink 56K v.92 Modem

I direct IP with a friend who has dial up, but he has to host, he can not join my game.
