Multiple unit upgrades

i'm new at modding and i would like to know something for my first big mod: is it possible to make a unit upgrade to more than one unit? what i want to do is to make a multirole fighter and a interception fighter in modern era: both would upgrade from the fighter. is it possible? how?

No, if a unit has multiple upgrades it will fail to have any at all.

I wonder if the AI is using these upgrades. If so, it's only an UI issue, and modding the UI to provide multiple upgrade buttons will fix it. Anyone knows?
