Music Works WTH?

i have to say, I agree with angryjuz on this one, ITS A DISGRACE

its all very good to hear from the people who don't give a hoot about music but they seem to be missing the point

BNW dillutes the civ experience despite the makers claiming it improves it

I can't help but feel this thread is somewhat pointless?

1. The files aren't midi, they're mp3.

2. They don't sound midi because.. they're mp3.

3. I honestly love every piece of music either way, and is undoubtely my favourite type of Great Work.

I mean, sure, I get it, but just because Firaxis HAS the assets/money to create their own versions, they still have other MORE important stuff to tackle, like balance, game mechanics.

This is nothing more than an aestethic part of the game, if you dno't like the music, turn it off.

your answer is pointless and just cements the argument. you don't give a hoot about music and miss the point.

Try syringing your ears then listen to the difference in quality of the general background music and that of the great works. If you still can't tell the difference please never get involved in making music

You don't need to be unnecessarily rude to get your point across.

All I'm saying is that the music is a tiny part of the game. Not to mention you only get a 4-8 second piece anyway when you "make" it.

i dont want to fight BigOz i just feel strongly about this - its such an erosion of quality that it makes me mad. If i could make music of a high enough standard that civ deserves, i would.

fair enough some people don't mind, some people don't care and some don't notice. I think that a cash upgrade should contain the same quality of content as the original, if not better.

I actually quite like GWoM, I don't really mind the quality. I still have to correct you here though; a lot of the GWoMs do sound like midi. They may be encoded as mp3s, but it still sounds like someone converted midis to mp3s. You do understand that midis are like digital copies of sheet music right? They aren't recordings like most other common audio files. They ultimately cannot reproduce the finer acoustic qualities that would be present in a natural recording, hence why even when converted to mp3s, they still sound stiff if you listen close enough.

i.e. even some of the best midi reproductions can sound robotic if you listen carefully.

It's not that I don't care about music, but I think those who are upset are missing my point. What you're talking about actually costs a surprising amount of money that went to something else in the game that would have had to have been dropped. Or there would have been fewer musical pieces, which also would cause problems (we've already had people run out of great persons in large long games and are unable to add new great works). I don't see how either of those is better.

there are many hours of high quality recorded music in the game already with real, talented musicians playing well and getting paid to do so.

All im asking for is a few minutes of music of similar standard to represent what the makers hold up as great works in the field.

i think its a shame that the works of literature were not voice acted out by someone with a fruity voice, but at least this is how the works were intended to be witnessed by the end user.

What would beethoven have said if he were alive to hear his work denigrated in such a cruel and penny pinching way?

Firaxis could've faced some SERIOUS legal disputes had they included copyright issues, they don't "penny pinch", not to mention that spending money on copyright for a 4-8 second music is really a silly idea.

Beethoven didn't live in our times, he lived pre-digital eras, and copyright (if they even existed) laws were probably completely different than they are now.

It's not penny pinching, it's simply logical.

They are, again an aestethic part of the game. Besides, the Great Works are all historical, hiring a unknown musician would defeat the purpose of that.

yeah ok.

but what would he say?

You can't expect anybody to know what he would say. You also don't specify, what if Beethoven would live in modern day? He'd probably copyright his art. But then again, I never knew Beethoven, so it's hard for me to judge him based on that.

The music plays for what? 5 seconds?

if they did put in higher quality music then they would need to play a clip longer than 5 seconds for it to even be worth the trouble. if they make it too long then people will listen to it once and be done with it.

Its fine. its a short clip to give the player an idea of what the music is like. its not supposed to be a big deal. :nope:

I have played civ 5 with the volume off since day one. I didn't know it had music until I read this thread and went and listened to it. I didn't think it was all that bad. especially after hearing the music in games like Panzer Campaigns. Does anyone know how many scores are in the game?

Wikipedia lists thirty for Civ 5 vanilla and twenty three for Gods and Kings. Twelve for Brave New World. Not a bad number.

Ok let's address some of these points as i've been away for a while:
1. It is a midi recording that has been recorded and turned into an mp3 QED please don't be a pedant and an inaccurate one at that.
2. If you don't care about the quality of the music in BNW you are not adding anything to the debate by saying so
3. Farix wouldn't have to hire an orchestra as these songs are hundreds of years old and they have been recorded hundreds of times...
4. The cost to firax would be minimal. It is a display of deadline sloppiness that needs addressing.
5. If they did this to the music why pay royalties to use the art and literature... or would a crayon drawing of the mona lisa be good enough? Or a shopping list be better that the words written by a great writer?
6. If you do have philistinic ways, please try and hide them as best you can.
7. BNW cost twenty quid... and should not have short changed its customer is such a way
8. The way defences have been made of the company I would wonder if Fraxis' PR are at work. This is a great game and I am annoyed by the poor execution of the expansion.
9. One comment about they need to work on other aspects of the game before this... 'they' brought out an expansion instead of working on those aspects... which is fine but you cannot have a great composer who when expended sounds like an ice cream van is coming up my street rather than an historic and revered piece of music

Fraxis, please help undo this tangible and undeniable wrong.

Uninterested Trollers... please don't write anything unless you have something to actually say.
